    Hi everyone!

In the process of getting a 2020 4runner. So, I need some advice.

We’re going for the 2020 white 4x4 premium with a 3rd row. Found one at AutoNationToyota in Cerritos, CA that will be here soon. Their MSRP is $44,222, with a $1,000 rebate from Toyota so making it $43,222. Tax in LA county is 10.25%, yes so damn high!!

They offered a discount of $1,042.62 making the total $42,179 without taxes and etc.

With that being said, the estimated total price with tax and fees is around $47,188. Do you think we can bring down the price even more? Is this a good deal? Considering everything going on right now.

Here’s a list of the fees: doc fee,tire/battery/mvwea, smog abatement fee, tag/registration fees, electronic filing, and flat add/county fee. Are these all necessary?

This would be my first time purchasing a new car. Wanted to get some advice from others who have purchased thiscar. Any help would be appreciated!

A couple questions to help maybe the discussion.

    1. Do you need 4x4? What's your vision for the vehicle.
    2. Do you need a 3rd row? Most 3rd rows are good for hauling kids or gear, not both. Check rear storage, it's very slim with 3rd row in there.
    3. Dang 10.25% is high. Dang!

$47k is a lot for a 4Runner, they get bad MPG, are kinda slow, and handle like a bus. However, they won't leave you stranded, and hold their value incredibly well if you're someone who swaps vehicles often.

I hope this helps a bit.

    Thanks for the reply!!

    To answer your questions:
    1. This will be my husband’s car. What he has planned, is up to him lol But it will be convenient for when we go to the mountains and what not.

    2. We have 3 kids! The third row would be handy if we need to travel with other family members.

    3. Yes, 10.25% is ridiculous! LA county sucks :(

Yeah, $47k is a lot :( do you think the price can negotiate it to a lower price?

You pay sales tax for where you live not where you buy the car. Don’t know if your in LA. 11% off msrp is usually as far down as you will get a Toyota dealer on a new vehicle. But in today’s market msrp is a decent deal because dealers are having a hard time getting them to budge on their price. We just bought the exact vehicle your looking at and the sale price was 43,819 before tags, taxes and processing fee. Before negotiations started the dealer had a 2,995 mark up over msrp, needless to say that was the first thing to go. I’d did take us 5 months to find a 4x4 Sr5 premium in white or grey with dark interior, so we had to jump on it when we found it in our area.

A good non COVID deal is what I did with my tundra. I got a left over 2019 tundra. Msrp was 49,4xx, out the door was 46,500 with tags and title and tax. I got the full 11% off msrp and the 3000 dollar rebate Toyota was offering at the time.

I purchased a 2020 SR5 Premium 4x4 with 3rd row in dark grey from Longo Toyota in Dec 2019. I used the Costco price as my negotiation tool. If I remember correctly, they quoted me 40,800 before taxes, license, etc. Hopefully you're a Costco member. It will help a lot

Do you have the actual quote? If so, do a quick search on cargurus/autotrader for similar models to the one you’re looking for in SoCal and see if anyone will beat it. Cargurus also lets you sort by days on the market. Dealers more willing to move a vehicle on the lot more than 90 days, since they have to start paying interest on it.

Online sales reps are more likely to talk pricing if you have an actual dealer quote. About 10% under MSRP is about the most I’ve seen lately. I got mine in June for 10% under msrp. Just be patient and good luck.

you’ll have to put in your information and a costco dealer will contact you. I believe their dealer was in Long Beach if I’m not mistaken.

The quote from the dealer with the price breakdown? If so, yes. Let me attach a photo.

This specific vehicle is in transit to the dealer. Will arrive next week or so.

Can you explain more about these online reps? Sorry, such a noob lol

Any advice on negotiating? 10% off sounds great!

Yeah so you fill out what you want and you'll get a list of one or more Toyota dealers that are within the Costco auto program. You can then contact each of those dealers or look on their website to see what inventory they have. Once you find a dealer that has what you're looking for (or they could find one for you), ask for the Costco price. It's fixed so there's no negotiations needed. Then you tack on any Toyota incentives. For me it was $500 "keep it wild" discount. Hope that helps!

That’s exactly what you’ll need. Go on cargurus and do a search in SoCal for the exact model and features you want I would use a 100 mile radius ( I would also sort by days on market too. The longer the better for you). There usually is a contact button there and just start emailing dealers. Ok to be upfront and tell them you have an offer for $42k and see if they can beat it. They will prob ask you for a copy of your offer. Good luck!

Once you get a Costco price quote, take that quote to other dealers to see if they'll match it. Longo isn't a Costco dealer but they honored the Costco price.

Yeah they should be contacting you but you can always reach out to them if you need to. If you do contact them, ask for a sales associate who can give you the Costco price on a vehicle.

Who cares? This never shows everything anyway.
I'd consider the third row just because of how the second row folds down on the third row versus non-third row models. I was actually kind of disappointed with how mine folds down in my non-third row with how the seat bottom flips up and takes some longways space with it. I test drove a third row model and test flipped the second row seats and was happy but went with a basic trunk since I didn't need the third row. Then I got mine home and found that it's different. Yeah, you lose some space top to bottom with a third row, but the slightly longer front to back space might be worth it to you. The third row also doesn't have the weird hill in the middle of the back when you have the second row folded down on non-third row models. You might be able to sleep back there comfortably without any modifications other than slapping a cushiony enough surface to be comfortable on top of it. If I want to do that on mine with no third row, I'll have to unbolt the flip-up portions of the seats and stash them at home. It's not so hard to do, but then you lose the versatility if someone's going to be coming and going from your party before you get back home.

Totally. This is why I decided on a third row with my Limited. The extra length in the cargo bay is huge, like more than half a foot. Even more if you push the front seats forward. And what would otherwise be a hump behind the folded second row is instead a trough that you can store stuff in. It creates a lot more versatility, both in passenger hauling and for sleeping or loading long items.

I have a 2019 with the third row and it's almost useless, at least for us. both my kids are 6' 2" or so and they're folded up pretty bad when they have to sit back there. and the rear storage space with that seat is about 6" wide if that. couple of skim boards can fit maybe. Otherwise I absolutely LOVE the 4Runner and will probably keep mine forever....but my wife picked up a Pilot for when we have to haul more than the four of us.

Yes, it's important for anyone debating two vs three rows in a 4R to realize that the third row won't fit anyone taller than, IDK, 5'9". The leg room is actually surprisingly good, and can be further increased by sliding one or both second row seats forward, but the head room is for avg height ladies or kids. And as noted, putting up the seats removes all but a narrow bit of cargo space.

So if you're hauling seven people you're hauling very little else. And two of those people better be short.

That said, it's worth pointing out the option of using only one of the rear seats. That gives you room for six people (one short) and a fair bit of cargo space.
