TRD Pro Bilstein/Fox Suspension Clone

As most of you know, prior to the 2019 MY, the TRD Pro version of the 4Runner came with a TRD Bilstein off road suspension.



What would be the closest aftermarket equivalent to the pre-2019 TRD Pro/Bilstein setup? Bilstein 6112/5160?



Are the Bilstein 6112 front coil springs similar to the TRD Pro front coils?

What about the rear? Are the coils the same between OR/ORP and Pro models?

Also, are the upper control arms the same between OR/ORP and Pro models?

I don't want/need any lift height. Just better handling.

 

6112/5160's is your closest match, but it won't be exact.

The front coils on the Pro and those offered with the 6112's are probably a different spring rate. Rumor has it that the Pro's with the Bilstiens have a spring rate of 550lbs whereas the coils on the 6112s are 600lbs (I believe, but don't quote me on that). Reliable info on stock spring rates is really tough to get on our trucks for some reason.

Not sure about the rear.

UCA's are the same on all 4Runners.

Are the OEM Pro Bilstein (or Fox Racing) suspensions available through Toyota parts dept? Could I just buy it new from Toyota?

 

When I emailed Bilstein to find out what part numbers would I need for the rear shocks for my 2015 TRD PRO, a rep emailed me back with these. Much more expensive than the 5160’s. I will probably go with 5160’s when my rears go out.

theyll bend your over price wise. If you’re willing to drop that kind of change get some Kings.

 

You might as well go with the 6112/5160 set up like you posted. You’ll save some good coin over Toyota OEM.

 

The 8100 series is badass. I wonder if they make a stock-height setup for the front too?

The spring rate on the Pro is #550 whereas on the adjustable 6112 is #600. Bilstein also makes a #650 spring that is a special order. I believe the cost is about #150. I have this set up and it gave me an additional .5" of height.

 

I'd look for some take-offs that someone is selling after putting new suspension on. I'd go for the Fox's since they'll be newer with fewer miles on them.

Assuming I could find a set of Bilstein TRD Pro takeoffs - What shocks would I replace them with when the originals failed? Bilstein 6112s? Ha!

 

It looks like you can get the TRD Pro Fox suspension new from Toyota (PN: PTR61-89190). $2600 to my door from ToyotaPartsDeal. You're probably right though - just find a take-off from someone used.



Most people suggest, "You don't need the TRD Pro, you can get the TRD Off Road (Premium) and put a better suspension on it for less than the $10k extra cost of the Pro." That analysis is partially correct. If you don't care about color, you can basically build a TRD Pro for a fraction of the cost. Albeit, without some of the creature comforts found on the Pro.

But if you want to keep the truck at stock-height, your aftermarket suspension options are more limited. And the TRD Pro Fox suspension is a good/great option.

The ToyotaPartsDeal website suggests that TRD Pro wheels and tires are necessary to install the Fox suspension. Is that true? Will the Pro/Fox suspension clear Trail wheels with 275/70/17 tires?

 

Honestly, you're better off buying Kings instead of paying for brand new OEM Fox shocks for the PRO. The quality you will get from Kings will be superior. Also, the PRO Fox shocks will raise your vehicle close to 1" in the front, just so you know.

But there are compromises with the Kings. You might have to rebuild them after a while. That being said, at least you are able to rebuild them. Once the Fox shocks are all used up, I think you'll have to spring (pun) for a new pair. Not sure what the lower limit is on Kings, but I'd be willing to bet you can lift your vehicle as little as 1" with them. Double check this if you decide to look into them.

But that's why I think you should go with a pair of Fox take-offs. You'll probably pay a much more reasonable price.

There isn't anything about the Fox shocks that prevents them from working with Trail wheels and 275s. You might have to do the fender liner mod, but with the proper alignment, that would be it.
