They can make smaller V8s as well. Toyota had a 4.0 V8 that probably didn't weigh much more than the 3.5, but I get the forced induction thing. EV for an off road vehicle? Not so much. If Musk or someone can develop satellite solar transfer where you can download a charge in an hour or two, then maybe. I know they are looking into it. But the way I see it, there are always gonna be people that try to tell us what we can own, what we can do, and where we can go, so enjoy your off road rigs folks.

youll just have to buy the special off grid access pack for that satellite charge for the low low price of $9,999.99 but it comes with a free 3 mo subscription.

I am in the same boat with electric vehicles. Once they figure out a way to extend the range, though, they'll be pretty sweet.

When I get my Cyber Truck, I’m keeping my 4 Runner for northern adventures where an electric vehicle can’t go yet. But other than that, it’ll be parked, and probably end up as a cool garage find for my grandkids someday.

Ecoboost early models the injectors would clog. Around 2017 they introduced port injection to clear that up. Coming form 150 I had a 2.7 and followed the forum. One guy there had 200k on his in 2 years with only recommend maintenance.
The 5.0? Even 2020s have issues with burning oil and other crap.

They went with a 3.5L 6 speed auto in the gen 3 Tacoma and imo it sucks. Driving it on the interstate is almost unbearable.

It's a shame because the Windsor 5.0 had several Million produced all over the world and a lot are still running today. 5 years of production for the 2.7 with no major issues is hard to argue with, and the power is impressive. Wonder what they're like to work on....

My 1990 Lx convertable 5.0 mustang stock still ran a 14.8 1/4 mile with 250,000 miles on it. So I can’t knock fords too much.

A Hennessey Bronco with a custom tuned King or Fox package would be the off road equivalent of a fighter jet. Only in my dreams where it's raining money and horsepower lol.
At least someone still has the V8 passion.

Up to a certain point it’s HP, then it’s tires+suspension=traction. Of course, you’re just praying the whole thing doesn’t blow up. That’s where old is something of a miracle.

FYI a few people commenting on the low tow ratings on the Jeep / Bronco even with lots more power.

I believe any vehicle that's convertible is capped at 3500lbs. I read that somewhere but not 100% sure it's true. That doesn't explain how the gladiator, also a convertible, has a much higher rating, however.

those 5 liter fords are one of the best engines ever made in any machine in my opinion. Bullet proof. I had the car set up with really light rims and tires, exhaust and headers otherwise stock. I think the gearing in those cars was set up perfect for street racing. I beat that thing up racing it, then my friend bought it from me and did about 10,000 donuts until 2nd gear blew out, then he sold it to my friend who drove it around another couple years till he sold it. same motor.

I get it, for sure, great machine! But where I off road it’s slow and easy wins the race. I’ve never been off road anywhere where HP mattered much.

That is one good thing about the southwest. There are plenty of places to open it up. Especially the countless sand dunes. My FJ was able to keep up with most of the Side by Sides in the dunes.

It definitely isn't for everyone. That's why the 4Runner suits most of us. The Raptor is too wide for a lot of the trails here in Florida. Some are even too narrow for my 4th and 5th gens. My family has settled in AZ so I would put it to good use out there. I've always liked speed, so I search out trails where I can use the power of my V8. I do think a 5.0 option in the Bronco would be pretty cool. But these days most people are drawn to FI to get the power they want. I'm just a dinosaur in a techno world.

Which 5.0 are you guys referring to? I had a Ford work van with the 5.0 and you had to redline it to get any power out of it. My next van had the 3.3 (or 3.7?) V6 and would run circles around the old 5.0.

V8's are fun and all, but they're going to become obsolete in anything but sports cars. Smaller, forced induction motors seem to be the better option now. Look at the new Ford GT.

Old 8 banger cars definitely gave a feel and sound all their own. There’s an engineering magic in a V8 for sure, but I’ve always been partial to 4 cylinder ICE, ever since I helped a friend race an MGB at Mosport and St. Jovite back in the day. Modern manufacturing tolerances have put a tightly wound up 4 cylinder engine into the high performance category and there’s a lot of advantages to it. We used a lot of folk engineering to get a British tractor engine to rev above 6400 without any valve float, which seems laughable today.

I have no experience with the new 5.0. The old Windsor had power to spare. But not saying the smaller displacements won't put power to the ground, but I'm just old school. As far as your work van? Probably tuned down to save fuel? I can tell you the same 3.5 in the Sienna as the Tacoma is night and day. Tacoma is anemic, the Sienna was a beast. Not the same tune and transmission mapping for what ever reason. Lot of variables to consider when comparing one vehicle to another. I for one will not be happy when V8s are gone. Everyone wants FI so it's inevitable. My sentiment is if Desert racers thought that FI was a viable option, there would be no V8s left in that world. They put the LS in a lot of rigs.
Whats funny was when I bought my 1st gen, everyone told me how slow the 22RE is paired with an automatic transmission. Once I did a tune up and some adjustment, it wasn't that bad. So there is some perception involved as well.

I do love the simplicity and a good inline 4. But, I really love the sound of an inline 6! :)

Folk engineering lol. Love it. Yea see that appeals to me as well. Getting something out of nothing. Those I4s sounded cool too. I had an MGB convertible back in the 80s, had a lot of in that car. I was really surprised that my 22RE would go as well as it does after I got her sorted out. Getting power out of an N/A is cool to me, but scoffed at by a lot of people now days. Hard to argue with the numbers that FI produces though.

Lol actually it wouldn't bother me, I know I'm a Dinosaur. Not familiar with the 152. I thought about doing a swap of some sort for awhile, 5vze, 2jz, or even a TDI, but these trucks are actually starting to draw a few bucks now, so I decided to try and keep fixing the odds and ends that need it. Except for the usual windshield rust the body and frame are in good shape.
But back on topic, I really hope the Bronco takes off in sales because it should open up some other ideas and options for Toyota.

Agreed. I LOVE my 4runner. But, if the new Bronco is a hit and causes Toyota to step their game up, I won't bitch. That said, I'm not sure what they would do. They seem to prefer to keep it conservative and reliable. And, I'm not really against this way of thinking. I'll still take slow and steady and reliable over the alternative.:D
