So, any advice on mounting a rooftop cargo basket to one of these beloved vehicles? I bought mine without the cross rails, and would love to throw a cargo basket on top, so I have the versatility to carry cargo (duh) or pop my canoe on the roof for a trip to the lake.

Well, I found a set of factory crossbars at a wrecking yard. $15 later, I can strap my canoe to the top of the rig.

Congrats on the roof rack rails. I use mine for canoe transport alot and use one of those canoe tie down kits from a sporting goods store or anywhere they sell canoes. It comes with the all the straps you need to hook up front rear and middle. No need to mess with rope or bungee cords!

With those cross bars you can pretty much install any roof basket you want. I like the ones with the cut outs for the bars to stick through. Like the one I have. Unfortunately mine is over 20 years old and BVG got bought out by Yakima or Thule. Here’s a couple of pics to show you what I have done. I like this one because it doesn’t sit super high and it’s flush with the cross bars. You can still find baskets in that style.

Can pick up the straps at big box hardware store or Wally.

well well worth the money, at times I’ve had a canoe and 3 kayaks strapped to the roof of my truck.
