4Runner Engine whine

Hey guys, so recently my 2013 4Runner Has developed a engine whine, the noise resembles the sound of a super charger “which it does not have” and I brought it to Toyota and they said the noise is completely normal. I test drove a 2018-2019 today and didn’t hear the noise in the newer models. Has anyone come across this issue? And if so what did you do to fix it? I’ve been told it can be the Oil Pump which I’m hoping it’s not. But what I will be doing is replacing the Ilder Pullys & the SERP Belt this weekend to see if that corrects the issue. Any help will be appreciated!

2013 4Runner 125,000K miles

 

I have some whine noise in my 2005 SR5 V6 with 150,000 miles. Doubt it is your oil pump. Do you get check engine oil lite or Codes?

I've been watching mine for over a year and there is no change, and could be normal wear. My whine is there at all speeds. Transmission shift like new.

30,000 miles ago I had the dealer do a 5 quart D/F of the tranny.

I've never had a check engine lite or a code in my 2005 in the 15 years that I've owned it.

If you are driving at 30 mph and you shift into neutral, does the whine go away. If it does it is somewhere in your drive train and not the engine. Look carefully at everything mechanical that runs on the serpentine belt - alternator, water pump, AC compressor for noise, but don't just replace anything.

 

It it possible to post a video of the noise?

My '19 makes a slight whining noise at moderate acceleration. It has done it since new, though.

 

My 2018 ORP is dead quiet. I have to check the tach to see if it’s a running, although wide open passing someone going uphill, which I hardly ever do, it has a throaty roar.

 

Mine does that as well. Going to check the air filter. Could be resonance of the air filter housing. Just a guess.

 

Replacing the accessory belt, idler, and tensioner is a good idea. I'd also do a flush of your power steering fluid while you're under the hood.

 

Have to replace all that within 46k miles? The sound on mine atleast only comes when touching the accelerator.The moment you let it go, the whine is gone. I also think it just might be normal operation as you have to listen for it carefully.

Actually "whine" is the wrong term here. Mine is more like a faint howling sound which makes me suspect its something to do with air intake. As it is directly affected only when I touch on the accelerator. I did clean the MAF sensor a while back, wonder if I didn't tighten the air hose properly. Will check.

 

My 2016 has always had the supercharger whine since day 1. Figured it was normal.

 

Weird, I was playing around with an OBD-2 app on my phone and was idling mine for a good 20 min. I heard a similar supercharger whine that I hadnt noticed before. I also noticed my HVAC was off, as well as my radio.

Of course, when I drove it later on, I kept radio and hvac off to see if it went away. Well, it was like an earworm…could not stop hearing it.

But then later, when I was actually driving to get somewhere, had the radio on, etc… the noise “went away” lol.

 

My 2014 has also had the whine since day one. At 100k now with no issues.

 

Food for thought... My 2005 V8 has it, my fathers 2008 V6 has it, and both the 2020 4RNR and Tundra i test drove from the factory floor had it (me knowing what to look for and considering an upgrade).

It is absolutely a thing for Toyotas to have. If yours doesnt then stupendous. If it does, it comes down to a random ground somewhere that I have never found, and so far others here havent seemed to either. I will say that since I replaced and upgraded my head unit, added an amp, and new speakers, the sound has changed. But it is still there.

 

My 2022 has the whine, I love it lol.

 

My 2012 4runner does the whine whenever I touch the accelerator. I have no issues and it doesn’t bother me. But I confirmed the noise is coming from the throttle body. Not sure why it whines but I noticed it when I was holding it open to clean it. My guess it is normal since a lot of runners seem to have it.
