hey all i am a new member. Just got this 2020 trd pro not too long ago. Got it for MSRP.

Never really got into cars and dont really know much about them so not just 4runner noob but car noob lol. I learn fast tho. Just trying to figure out what upgrades to get and how to install etc. I dont really want to splurge but I dont want to cheap it either. Just best value upgrades I suppose. I want to get a roof top tent (cvent) but I don't know if I have the ability to take it up and down the roof each time I go into the wilderness.

I want a rig that is capable of doing trails in national parks like death valley, capitol reef (and all the other utah national parks) and maybe some yellowstone. Also camping/glamping.

Any advice and direction pointing into further research will be helpful. I'll be resident noob for awhile so you will see me asking questions in other people's threads too.

Welcome from KY! The TRD Pro is pretty well set-up out-of-the box but you may want to look at investing in rock sliders and upgrading the stock skid plates depending on the type of trails you’re looking to hit. However, if you’re mainly sticking to campgrounds, fire roads, etc. your rig will be fine as-is. Also, you may want to explore other roof racks as I’m not sure if you one would work well with the TRD roof rack (think there was a thread on this topic though).

You can spend too much money too quickly on stuff you think you need but don't.

Find locals, there's a lot in SoCal, meet up, talk shop, learn. Go wheeling with them (don't go alone at first please). Leave it stock, the community will help you if you get stuck or need to get some advice.

Then, build it up thoughtfully over time based on what you really need. It's a fun hobby but gets expensive and you begin making sacrifices to drive ability if you're not sure about what you want.

Let me offer up two things to begin looking at. Better tires and armor. Keep the armor light, keep the tires stock size 265/70/17. The pro comes with some totally decent tires, so I'd really just look at armor first...specifically rock sliders. Frame mounted if you plan to wheel it.

Go to Amazon and waste $100 on fun little things like matching cupholder inserts, it will be easy and cheap and make you feel like you're customizing it.

Avoid deciding on suspension components until you really know what you want, the Pro has a good set of shocks, you'll likely make it worse before you make it better.

Save your money and buy a ground tent.

You'll be able to set up your tent and go offroading without having to put away a roof top tent every time you want to drive somewhere.

I am also a Travel Trailer > Tent Camper > RTT Camper > Teardrop.

Teardrop is easy to tow, and I can deploy at camp and don't have to set up and take down if I want to move. I don't have to fall off the ladder twice :/ anymore either. If I'm going where trailer doesn't make sense, $25 academy tent has survived many a rainstorm and kept me dry, so it's my go-to + airmattress.
