Stock rims on the trail.

Hi! how you doing guys, I'm new here.
Just got my 2018 TRD ORP and going over ideas to beef it up. I was going over wheels but I'm kinda partial to the stock Toyota wheels already on (they compliment the silver badges). But worried how well they stand up to the trails. Any advice is much appreciated.

 

They are a fantastic stock wheel.

Keep them and spend the money on new tires instead.

 

They seem to hold up well. The design protects the valve stem pretty well. I don't have them, this is just the general opinion I have read about them.

 

The OR wheels are very good off road. They are 7.5" wide v 7" for the SR5 and PRO wheels, so in theory they can accommodate more tire choices. They have a valve stem protector, which again the SR5 and PRO wheels do not. They seem super beefy, I've never heard of one breaking.

From an opinion standpoint, I think they are very nice looking wheels. No reason to swap them out.

You could always buy a take off set (I paid $300 for a set, though some guys seem to think they're worth a lot more... keep looking...) and run a dedicated off road setup to keep your original set nice and free from rock rash etc.

I had the stock off road rims, sold them and got the TRDs in mat grey. I have always regretted that decision. For all the reasons mentioned above the stock rims are a great rim for off roading. If I had to do it over again I would have kept the stock rims and used the money elsewhere.
Not that the TRD rims suck, and they look good on my rig, just buyers remorse in this one there is.

 

The ORP stock wheels are really high quality off road wheels. Not many after market wheels can touch them. Ok, their look is subjective, but no one could take issue about their quality. They’re wider than the TRD Pro wheels that a lot of guys switch to. That little notch that protects the valve stem is pretty unique. But more importantly, they’re strong, and are easy to balance and they stay in balance on and off road.

I am switching from the 2020 TRD ORP wheels to black PRO wheels on Monday.
The ones I’m getting rid of are indeed superior wheels, and I feel a bit foolish doing the swap. On the other hand, I really want black rims on this T4R and my fave trusty E range KO2’s. And I got a great offer from a local buyer for the OEM set off the new ‘runner.
I listed the OEM set on craigslist, and had 8 responses from Gen 1 Tacoma owners who wanted to go to 17” wheels. didn’t even have to include the sensors.

 

Full disclosure: I also had TRD wheels but in black, really disliked them - I don't think dark wheels look good on black or dark gray trucks - plus every asshole has TRD wheels and a faux Pro grille, so keeping the OR wheels actually is setting yourself apart from the herd. I find it odd that on a truck spec'd for offroad stuff the Pro has what are essentially SR5 wheels (6 spoke, 7", no valve guard)...

As many have said, the off-road wheels are excellent quality. There's no reason to replace them other than wanting to change offset, or just because you want to.

I think this depends on what you do with the truck. I loved the off-road wheels. But, once I installed rock sliders, they looked out of place. That said, I'm glad I went with Pro-Comp instead of the PRO wheels, as (like you mentioned) so many people have them. I just wanted black wheels to match the other accessories on the truck.

That said, I just put some silver wheels on the GF's MGM TC, and I really like the look.
