What features/options on current 4Runners do you like or dislike?

I really like the old style lever transfer case shifter. Engages & disengages like soft butter.
I always disliked button or knob or dial engagement systems.

 

Hmmm, not much I don't like about my 2018. I preferred the styling of the Gen 4 and 3 but I can live with the Gen 5 looks.

 

KDSS is a positive game changer for me. Feels like the wheels hug the terrain and maintain traction at slow speed crawling. Moving fast around twisties, body roll and side forces are noticeably minimized. Wish I had it on my Tacoma, too. Never understood the late model Land Cruiser mystique before.
I have a Wrangler with small lift that I removed the sway bar when new in '94, and I have driven late model high spec wranglers with he swaybar hydraulic disconnect switch on dash. Having no swaybars is great at low speed, but it always feels perilous above 50mph. The KDSS seems to be the best of both worlds.

 

Now I remember! I don't like the small screen for the infotainment system.

 

Heated seats but not cooled

6 speed transmission would be amazing

bigger glovebox would be nice

factory remote start vehicle shuts off when you open door

Nothing I lose sleep about

 

Love the KDSS feature also.
Wish ORP came with auto AC like the Canadian model.
Auto headlights, and 6 speed tranny to improve fuel economy would also be nice.

 

Bought a 2020 4Runner after 3 Ford Explorers and 3 Ford Edges.
Biggest problem so far......the heat/AC system.
On the most recent Fords there is an adjustment for the driver and the passenger, each can set their own level of comfort.
The 4 Runner.....about like the 1949 Chevy I had a longggg time ago.
One setting for both and I'm sure most men find there is a difference in what they and women find comfortable. We live in AZ and summer isn't here yet.
May have to dump the.....car, not the wife. Have done that before.....cars are cheaper.

 

The silly thing is that the 4runner limited trim has dual climate control.

 

My likes: fully boxed frame, rear disc brakes, power seats, heated front seats, better approach and departure angles then my Tacoma, 1- piece driveshaft no driveline shudder like the Tacoma 2-piece, 4-link rear suspension, manual transfer case shifter, more hp and torque then my Tacoma, KDSS...love it, gauge cluster is beautiful compared to my Tacoma, sliding rear deck, still made in Japan

Dislikes: window buttons on the window sill, predator face in the front, and pricier then my Tacoma.

 

Wish there was more storage places for tools and retrieval gear & small items. Under rear seats or under the cargo space around the spare tire or in the dash or the empty area under the hood etc.

I totally agree, Starr, and for me especially at high speed it’s great. You really notice how it tracks when you’re in a ramp, or in a turn. Flat, like a high performance car.

 

I love almost everything about my 4R, except....
Using the buttons on the tailgate to lower and raise the rear window, only work when all the doors are closed
When I park, If I push the lock button on the fob, and one or more of the doors are open, it beeps until they are closed.
I miss dual zone climate control
Cooled seats would be nice here on the surface of the sun, I mean Arizona!
ORP should come with some type of upgraded suspension. Maybe not Fox, but something.

Other than that, I love it!

 

Dunno about "soft butter". More like a stick of butter thrown into a thresher. You have to slam that bitch around top keep it from grinding! That said, I do like it!

You definitely need to be decisive about engaging it. Kinda reminds me of putting an outboard motor in gear.

 

The off road capability of the OR is fantastic.

 

It depends on how much tension is in the drive line.

 

I think it also helps to make sure the wheels are straight.

 

I wish they offered a real off-road package.

Wider track width, boxed arms, more travel, coilovers, supercharger.

Of course it would be +$60k and I would never buy one, but it would be cool to look at!

 

The problem with that is that everyone would want different suspension and accessories.

I would want Kings, but I doubt Toyota, or any manufacturer, would want to deal with rebuildable shocks.

I would love to have a supercharger, but not if I had to give up KDSS.

 

In hindsight, I would definitely give up KDSS for a supercharger. As much of an improvement KDSS is compared to not having it, solely based off test driving, it wasn't until I changed out the suspension and added upper/lower rear links that I thought I have a rig that handles well. It'd be interesting to drive another rig with an identical suspension minus the KDSS. Til then, I'll have my doubts about it.

 

The thing about KDSS is that it would be the limiting factor with extended travel coilovers. I'd be ok not having the KDSS so I could fine tune the ride with a coilover set up.

 

I love how the rear window rolls down all the way. Probably my favorite thing about these vehicles.

 

Not much I don't like. About 20 more HP and torque would be great as well as a 6th gear. More storage would be nice too. My Forester has all these "nannies" that people seem to love but I dislike most of them, just too much, but the one thing I love is the adaptive cruise control. I'd really like the 4Runner to have that. I have an SR5 and wish it had a lever instead of the dial to select 4WD but that's about it. I really love this vehicle.

 

One of my complaints has to do with the unlocking feature with the keyfob in your pocket. On the 2020 you walk up to the truck, grab the door handle and the door unlocks, but only the driver's side door. To unlock the remaining doors you have to reach in and press the unlock button or use the fob. This is a real pain in the ass when trying to throw something in the backseat (there are no door lock/unlock sensors on the rear doors) or when you have passengers. And yes, I'm aware you change the setting to unlock all doors on grabbing the door handle but I don't want all my doors to unlock every time. Yes, first world problems haha!

On my other half's Tiguan, you can touch the handle once to unlock the driver's and twice to unlock all the doors.

 

True, but it wouldn't limit it as much as a non-KDSS sway bar.

If I was planning on building to the point of removing sway bars, I wouldn't have gotten KDSS.

But, then again, I just did my first trail run with the Bilsteins and I'm thinking about getting Kings next year, if I can afford it. So, maybe I'll change my mind about KDSS as well...

 

It's the little things, but wouldn't it make more sense for the ORP headlight switch to go DRL>Off>Park>On instead of Off>DRL>Park>On? That way, when you flipped it all the way back before you shut off the vehicle (as I expect most of us do) there'd be safety lighting on by default?

Auto headlight vehicles seem to have this figured out.

 

Yeah, in my fantasy runner, there would be no sway bars either. I'd add bypass shocks all around for fine tune adjusting and total control. I think it would be hard to beat in just about any terrain.

Did you find some limitations with the Bilsteins? Do they just leave you wanting more out of the suspension?

 

Basically the whole drive train is disappointing. Option a 5.? liter, and the gas mileage depends on my right foot, not the bean counters whim.
Option a manual transmission, lower transfer case gears, lower differential gears.
And what's with all the nanny buttons, let me drive.
I like the heated seats, as does my Wife. And the lift gate because our former Rav did not.
I guess it's a love/dislike thing.
Can't compare it to my Jeep TJ tho.

 

The Bilsteins are nice. They're stiff on smaller bumps, like digressive valved shocks are supposed to be. I went with them due to the ride height options, and the fact that they're no-maintenance shocks.

But, given the option, I think I'd prefer a progressive or bypass shock for a cushier ride. I was very tempted to get Kings right away, but I didn't want to deal with the maintenance.

If I get to a point where I'm not putting so many miles on it, I might switch over.
