So I took my 2020 TRDORP in for the first 5k service. My 4R tells me that oil service is required. Apparently they used synthetic and it doesn’t need to be changed till 10k. I asked if they could change the interval on my 4R so I wouldn’t have to bring it in, they said no. The manual makes no reference to synthetic.

You still need tire rotations every 5k and 5k, 10k, 15k services

Your allowed 2 oil changes in your free maintenance.
    1. Find a new dealer they suck, they can do it at 5k, buy will be limited to 2 changes
    2. They actually did you a favor. Here and another forum 100s have reported dealer's that strip skid plate bolts, drain plugs, crack filter housing, one guy here they screwed up his paint leading to a paint job!
It's not just Toyota, I've had Ford mess up my old truck and Jeep screwed up a Grand Cherokee. After Ford, they use unskilled cheap labor. I will be the only one to touch my 4runner. If you can, do it yourself

It’s more the fact that Toyota changed the interval but didn’t update the onboard computer to reflect the change. I’m happy with the every 10k but could you imagine if a dealership wasn’t completely honest and went with what the 4Runner said?

The onboard indicator interval is based on multiple conditions, low mileage with short trips could indicate more frequent changes. Your dealer should be brilliant enough to know that.

    0W-20 only comes in synthetic.

Did it say "Oil change" or more of a generic "maintenance required soon". If it's the latter, it can indicate tire rotation and propeller shaft lubrication

I didn’t know that about 0w-20 and “oil maintenance required”.

That’s why they invented an owners manual for the owner to read and familiarize themselves with their new vehicle..

Sure, thanks for that. Just seemed weird to have a message pop up saying “oil maintenance” at 5k when the manual says 10k. Kinda like they didn’t put that in the manual....

Wonder what year they changed the message? My '17 just says "Maintenance" never specifically "Oil Maintenance"

The "oil maintenance required" alert is new. Use to only say "maintenance required." I'd be willing to bet it's new with the 2020 interior redesign.

It could be that they are alerting you now at extreme driving condition intervals.

Or it could have been a mistake that they correct with a software update at some point.

Either way, you can turn that alert off yourself.

When my 2020 hit 5k the message said, “Maintenance Required”, not “Oil change required”. When I took it to the dealer no oil change was done. Just tire rotation and inspection.

I see where the "oil" part is confusing, but based off that description in the manual, you don't actually need an oil change at that interval unless you're driving in extreme conditions.

Maybe just saying "maintenance required" was freaking people out and they were mistaking it for a check engine light, so they decided to make the warning more specific. I don't know......I'm just spitballing here.

I just reset the light myself and move on.

Odd that they changed it to "oil maintenance required" though...seems like an unnecessary and inaccurate change.

Change your own oil every 5000. No dealer needed.

And the fluid in the transmission lasts for a "lifetime".

I do my difs and transfers case every 30k. I do my trans every 60k as well as spark plugs. I do my oil every 5k. Fluids are cheap relative to the components they protect.

Mine started a few hundred miles with the oil change soon. Then at 5K the radio said maintenance required. I can check my own fluids and I had Discount Tire rotate my tires since I have one real close and with the China virus they let me pull the 4R in and stay inside the vehicle. They didn't touch anything but the tires. I don't know what the hell goes on at the dealership. I reset the message myself and I will get it changed at 7,500-10K.
