    I have a 1997 SR5 4runner and was wanting to put a hitch on it. I'm aware many came from factory with one but was wondering if there were other mechanical differences like a different transmission cooler or gear ratios. Any help would be greatly appreciated

    There must be a difference I have a factory SR5 Limited..... So I got all the flares, wood grain, and options of the Limited. But also the “heavy duty” of the SR5 but not sure of the upgrades???

    My son has what my mother said was a factory installed tow package that I think has brake control in a box screwed to the dash under the steering wheel. I want to detach it, but not sure if that will mess things up.

    A box like that, if it has a lever is probably only routed through the rear trailer hook-up harness. It would allow manual actuation of the trailer brakes for trailers that had active brakes.

    I'm kind of doubting that would be a factory thing. In 2002 the "tow package" was a tow hitch and a gear ratio. If I wanted to support actuating rear trailer brakes I would have had to add or have the dealer add one of those boxes. Many dealer add-ons are viewed by buyers as "factory"...the dealer likes it that way.

    What would the "tow packed" ratio be? Compared to the standard ratio?

    4.10:1 vs something lower which would have given a bit less torque but better mileage. I don't know if it was for all years. I just remember the Toyota salesman telling me that in 2002.

    Looking it up...it was SR5 "Option Package 2".

    Oh that's cool, I put a 4:11 in a f250 I had, a little preppier than the 3:08 that was in it

    yes. 4.1 is the same as 4.10
