For those of you interested in getting some butt dyno performance out of your 4runner, look no further than the K&N series 63 cold air intake. The intake itself is a slight improvement in terms of design, the filter is much better than stock, but there have been complaints that the heat shield is ineffective. in the time i have had it, i haven't had any issues with it at all and it sounds GREAT.

    The intake- http://www.amazon.com/63-9023-AirCh...r=2004|2004&carId=001&n=15684181&s=automotive

    The install-

Install is incredibly easy, if you can grasp removing and replacing bolts, you can do this in under an hour. removing the stock air box consists of <10 bolts, and 2 hose clamps. Installation of the intake is just as simple, you only need to make sure to reconnect the vacuum lines, MAF, and tighten all the clamps down. once you've done that, enjoy the WHOOSH noises.

    Wicked easy install.

Snapped off a welded on nut in the wheel well though, but whatever!

Back before my lift... When my engine was still clean and presentable

Filter "improvement" over stock is subjective. The K&N MIGHT flow more air,but it certainly allows more dirt to pass than stock.

But the oil fucks up your MAF sensor.

I'm trying to find a dry replacement for my K&N filter

Can't tell if this is a troll post or not... Seeing as air intake is now IN the engine bay, you're pulling in hotter air regardless of how good the heat shield is (that is assuming you're not all boxed up with a tube pulling from the well again). Just because the surface will be hotter, thus heating the air because of 2nd law of thermodynamics.. And because air is a mixture of gasses, and those gasses are being pulled in at one focal point, the pressure difference causes said air to heat even easier.

Edit: However, they still do sound awesome! It's just whether or not you want to sacrifice ~$300 for the sound. The increase in airflow should make up for the heat, and it may produce some small, insignificant power gains, if that.

Well seeing as it's installed on my 4runner and has been for some time, no it isn't a troll post. The important thing to realize about these intakes and stock ones is that the heat is there on both. Having had it on for a while, the heat shield does more than I thought it would, and you may be right that it's pulling hot air, but remember, on the stock intake the filtering happens right at the throttle body, and all of that plastic is right above the passenger side manifold, heat rises yadayada. With the k&n, the filter is the first element, then air is sent straight through to the throttle body. It absolutely flows more, but because of this it filters less, which could be an issue if you live in high dust environments, but for me is never going to be an issue. As far as price goes, I'd never spend $300 on it, I got mine for a steal.

On Toyota's, it's mostly sound, but if you look at a lot of American motors, some air boxes are incredibly restrictive, and cold air intakes actually produce noticeable gains

I should have elaborated in that I specifically was talking about our trucks. But yes, Americans can't build engines worth shit, so anything you can replace will give you a power gain :p

I know! That's why I don't see the use in a CAI! I make ~400 horsepower with my HCF delete, Borla Muffler, K&N drop in filter, and stickers, yo.
