Spare tire in OEM TRD Pro roof rack

Hey guys, I want to relocate my spare from under my new 2019 truck to the roof. I was told that there are mounting kits out there to adapt my OEM Pro roof rack to accommodate the spare, but I can't find anything online. I'm sure I could find a way to secure the tire to the rack someohow, but would rather buy a use-specific bracket/rack for this. Don't wanna be in an accident and have my spare fly off into someone's face...

IMO, I'd severely injure myself trying to wrestle a spare tire, even the stock one, onto or off of the roof, no doubt.

 

An expensive option but a Baja Rack specifically for the TRD PRO rack should work with your choice of ratcheting straps or other.

You're relocating ~70 lbs from the lowest point on the vehicle to the highest point on the vehicle, in exchange for some improved departure angle. I'd think pretty carefully about that. I assume you want to do this for off-roading purposes, and there's a significant trade-off involved. When rigs roll on the trail, it is often due to inappropriate weight distribution.

 

I have a bracket that Front Runner sells, that fits on my Front Runner roof rack. It might be adapted to the Pro Roof rack. I bought it because up here in Canada on some of the far northern roads such as the Labrador Road, and the Dempster Highway, they strongly recommend/require a second spare. The question isn’t whether to put it up there but how to do it. I personally don’t think that those fancy little cargo ladders will do it. They look cute and are great for retrieving sleeping bags, but they’re strictly light duty affairs at best. Probably the best is the Front Runner ladder that rests in the ground. I haven’t tried it yet, but plan to. Let me know how it goes.

There is also a way to mount the tire to an assembly in your trailer hitch that is very functional. Check that out, I believe Wilco makes it

 

Here’s what I’ve been using to get junk on and off the roof rack and also washing the roof. Foldable step that hugs the tire and is easily storable inside the rig or on the rook rack somewhere. Can be useful for OP’s spare tire needs.

Wikipedia says 5th gen 4Runners have a weight from 4400 - 4800 # +/-
Figure a tire/wheel/tpms package to be about 75 # +/-

That 75 # would be hell getting on a roof rack, but even if you did, that represents less than 2% of your rolling weight moving from under the frame rails to 7' up in the air.

When I had my lifted `86 FJ60 (ARB fr/rr bumpers, Warn M8274-50, OME heavy fr/rr springs), I put a 33x12.5x15 BFG MT on steel wagon wheel on my ARB roof rack and never felt the spare up there.

It was challenging enough getting the tire on the tailgate, then getting on the tail gate to heave it up on the roof rack. I can't imagine doing that on a ladder.

Let me think about this a minute....................me at 165 lbs + me at 73 yrs. old + very good physical condition (lift weights regularly) = no freakin way would i put the spare up there.

 

If you can lift it up there it’s no problem at all. That much weight isn’t a huge deal for roll or anything. I’ve seen a guy here who did it on his pro rack and I feel like he just pulled it to the very back of the rack and somehow strapped it very tightly and then packed stuff around it. The correct straps won’t allow it to move around up there unless you’re going 70 over bumps. Two people can easily get a spare up and down from the roof rack.

 

How about this as a solution. For over a year I’ve been prototyping and testing a skid plate for the spare tire. Check out www.spareskidplate.com. I make them out of aluminum and UHMWPE plastic. Definitely has saved my spare wheel and tire.
