Gas Mileage Question

Hello all

So just wanted some community feedback here. Bought a 4R TRD Offroad Premium in November and have put about 2k miles on it. I don't beat on it and infact try to keep the ECO light when driving. I live in the Suburbs with open roads and I am wondering why my gas mileage sucks. I was expecting 16 to 17 MPG in my area but I am really at 15.2. The only things I have done are the TRD rims (with standard tires that came on it), the TRD front Skid plate. Can you all give me any input?

All of this has been with driving not off-roading or camping

What I found to work the best is to pay attention to that little green ECO light. You aren’t going to get anywhere fast but it does help mpg’s. The longer it stays on the better the fuel efficiency. I do 90% highway and can barely keep it at 19 for the last 46k. Stop signs/stop lights kill gas mileage in these things...understandably in my opinion...they are 5000 pound tall SUVs.

reset it on your next fill up but also hand calculate. It’s pretty accurate but just to confirm.

 

I average 18.5 MPG on the freeway and closer to 15 with city driving. I think your MPG is about right for the driving style. I also have a very light foot.

 

I keep my display on mpgs.....I haven't reset the mpg since buying the SR54R new 16 months ago......mine holds steady at 19.6.

 

At 2k miles you just left the breaking in period. I would honestly reset the mpg readout next fill up and it should increase. With a bumper, winch, and lift I can get 20 mpg on the highway and upper 16s in the city, and I'm not diving like grandma either, so being stock you should get close to 17 in the city if not higher depending on how you drive.

 

I have a 2020 SR5 4Runner with about 1000 miles so far and averaging about 17.5 mpg.

 

I own a 2016 sr5 now in Florida , I am getting 20MPG . driving speed 30-60MPH..
back in the cold north east temps 20-30F I get around 16MPG same driving speed.
I did switch to toyota 0-20wt SN PLUS last nov 2019 and the MPG improved 1-1.5MPG..
also cold start little noise.
2,000 miles on it it will take about 5,000miles for the engine break in so it will improve the MPG a bit. change the oil at the 5,000 , on the first oil change ... then 7-10K oil change ..
driving above 70 MPH mpg drops rapidly ..

 

Hey everyone, thanks for the input. At least I'm not losing my mind. I didn't buy this for gas mileage but I was worried something else might be up. I will continue to monitor and take these suggestions in my driving. You all did make a good point about it still being in the breakin period which does take some time. I will say I love driving this truck and enjoy the ownership of it, cant wait to see what I get into this summer with her.

 

It’s because it is brand new. I was only getting 13-14 mpg the first 3-5k miles. I now have over 21k and average 17.2 over its lifespan.

 

The first 2K miles or so I was stuck around 16 MPG. My combined average has since creeped up to 17 . . . hoping it was a break-in period, myself.

 

I live in Colorado (commute 40 miles each way daily - I know not the best for the 4R but I like driving it) and running the lovely 85 octane at ~75 MPH, I've been averaging long term 20.7 on my trips. Sometimes 19ish with wind, other times I've seen 24+, but that's less common. I never pay attention to the eco light.

When I run up to the ski resorts and back, I'll see about 20 round trip - 16 to 17 up and a bit more on the way down. I run in 4th gear most of the way up, some areas 3rd and still going 60/65 at times - aka not babying it.

I did change my oil right at 1000 miles after "break-in" not that it's needed. Are you running very aggressive tires? I'm currently fully stock, minus a 6-pack ski rack on the roof.

 

It should loosen up when it gets many thousand miles on it. They take awhile to break in. I get 21 at 55/65 on interstate long distance. 15/17 at 75 up

I guess I should say I always burn HiTest gas also I’ve noticed a couple more miles to the gallon with that

 

I've done zero to mine since bought 2 years ago this September (mod wise I mean.) Well it does have a remote start but that doesn't count here. 14,800 miles on it and the gauge is reading 20.9 probably 65-70% highway up till now cause I'm taking a daily driver to work everyday. Once the DD "$hits the bed" it's the 4R everyday. I'll keep it 5-6 years probably and it's gone time to try something else. I like the vehicle very much don't "love" it that I'll be keeping it forever.

 

On a road trip, I got 21mpg per the dash display doing all highway with little stopping driving no faster than 70mph. But around town, I'm getting at best 15mpg. I only drive it about 500 miles a month so the low mpg's don't bother me much. 2020 Limited.

How fast on the highway are you usually traveling?

 

I have 16K miles on my 2019 Off Road.

Last tank hand calculated was 19.2mpg. That's driving in hilly curvy rural SW Missouri with winch, lift, and armor.

 

So suburbs driving, a few miles from each stop light and open roads, on the highway (which I don't drive much) Im running about 80-85.

 

This is why.

City driving will eat up the mpgs as will driving fast on the highway.

Let's say you drive the same city route, but drop your speed from 80 to 65mph on the highway, you'll up your mpgs to 17 or so, I'm guessing.

Reset your calculator on your next fill up and give it a try.

 

yes you do have low MPG because of 80MPH plus...drive it 70MPH and you will get 19-20MPG.
put the pedal down easy to increase speeds.
