Crappy gas mileage

Freaking crooked bastards!!

 

They're a pretty under-rated tire IMO. Really good on and offroad and in the rain. They did well in some soft sand I drove through. Haven't tested them in snow yet.

I think people like that look of knobbies going down the sidewall and write these off as not being aggressive enough or providing the look they like. I hate that look and the Firestones were one of the few A/T options that didn't have it. Don't think I would have even considered them if it wasn't for that, but then I read the reviews and tons of people had great things to say about their performance and longevity so I gave them a shot. I love them too. Great tire. And only 42lbs for a 285/70/17!!

 

How much did a set of those Firestones set you back?

 

I love my 4Runner for it's looks and reliability, and it drives great around town, but when we hit the highway (a lot, thanks to kids doing soccer, band and robotics...) I question whether we should have kept our Sienna.

 

Like $700. That's in NC. They usually have a $100 rebate every other month if you use their Firestone Credit Card.

For what its worth, I have owned my 99 for 20 years and I have never gotten good fuel consumption. Its a known thing if you troll the internet. 220-240 miles per tank.

 

Ok thanks for the information. That's exactly where I am at with the 240 per tank!

 

Mine gets about the same. Granted it is lifted and a 5 speed but I usually get 230 or so out of a tank of gas. I'm sure the odometer is off a bit due to the bigger tires but I didn't buy the 4runner for it's fuel mileage.

 

That is what I used to get in my 92. Now I am lucky to get 200. LOL
By the way OP, nice looking 3rd Gen. I do believe you have a Sport Edition not an SR5.

 

My 02 was a SR5 Sport, just sayin. Lol

Just checked mine currently 18.6 mpg
134k, 02 v6,4x4.
Proably just a little better on longer drive,but not worried about it,its reliable as all get out so...That's the way it is....

 

I'm at about 16 mpg. Would I like to get more? Of course but I'm not loosing sleep over it. I have 467,000 miles and just happy it's still going strong.

 

Any major repairs at that mileage?

 

Little things here and there but engine and tranny are perfect. These are amazing vehicles!

Absolutely! This truck is more reliable than a brand new Chevrolet... Lol

 

My bad, it is the SR5 Sport Edition.

 

No kidding on the reliability. I added up everything I needed to really do on my '02 last year...and it came out to about $2500 in parts in preventive maintenance really. I looked around and there isn't a car that is as reliable. So what the heck. Rebuilt the front end. Redid the rear shocks. Redid the T-Belt/tensioners. Redid the valve covers, all new vacuum and most coolant hoses and new throttle body. Flushed transmission. And more.

People are buying $40k cars every 6-10 years now...and I'm still on my $25k 4Runner almost 20 years later. That needs NOTHING. One hell of a good buy.
