Rock slider recommendations?

I purchased and can recommend the 4 x Innovations rock sliders with step platea and TRD logo on back plate. They are bolt on, but raw, so you have to be willing to give them the POR-15 treatment and top coat with something like (aerosol) bed liner to seal the POR-15 rust preventative from UV. I suggest watching the install video as you should be a wee bit handy to install, and have necessary tools.

 

Are these the angled ones and if so do they work at all as a step?

 

Yes, angled. They work OK as a step. I use the kickout as a step to access the roof rack and it works well.

 

I recently installed factory running boards and they work great...but they just make the truck look so dull. So I am scoping out my replacement options. I am not really sure but it looks like the RSG flat sliders sit higher than factory boards but I am not 100%. However I do want something that rides higher. I use them mostly to not rub off the paint on my door sill again. And did you find as change in performance after adding the weight?

 

I think the flat sliders might sit a bit higher than the factory running boards.

I haven't noticed any loss of performance. I generally travel with a few hundred extra pounds anyway.

I have a set of RSG flat sliders on order, and one side actually arrived today (they both were supposed to be here today, thx UPS). Anyway, I will post plenty of pics just as soon as the other side gets here and I can get them installed. Then we'll all see how the flatties look. Stay tuned. For now, see post # 45 below.

You can put a set in a cart, then start the checkout process. You'll see the shipping cost prior to actually having to place the order. RSG has a discount code for $100 off going currently. That almost offset my shipping.

 

I will attests the RSG sliders with kickouts work and do not bend. The kickouts work great to while loading the roof and washing the roof too.

I went with those Shrockworks in the pic for a few reasons.

1. They were in stock and they are in Texas so I received them in 1 day.
2. They had a step which I don't need, but I also don't want my dog to get his foot caught while jumping in or out.
3. They were $800 shipped to my door and they were powder coated.

I will be having these installed next week mainly because I don't feeling like dropping the gas tank to mount them. That is more than I want to try to tackle. I will report back later what I think of them.

 

Do they have to drop the gas tank to install the sliders or to install a gas tank skid?

 

It looks like you have to drop one side and keep a jack underneath the tank according to my research. Not sure how I feel about that...because this is the other one I liked. I can get a Shrockworks shipped to my house for $735 and the RSG is about $950 shipped (this includes the $100 discount).

Is the quality any different and is it really worth spending 200 plus bucks to not have to mess with the tank... Or is it one of those jobs that sound worse than it is??

 

If I were going to drop the tank for any reason I would go ahead and add a beefier skid to it. Also, I know the RSGs are bolt on, my buddy and I did them in a couple of hours in my garage.

On the driver side I had to place my jack under one of the hydraulic lines for the KDSS that runs along the frame and put a bit of pressure on it to flex the line up just a "smidge" to get the bolt into the hole. Freaked me out a bit but in the end it was no big deal. I haven't heard of anyone else needing to do this so it was probably just the production tolerance on my specific Runner. Also because I have the KDSS I had to cut a 1" by 2" notch in the KDSS skid. Again, that took me longer to grab the angle grinder out of the tool box and plug it in than it did to make the cut.

I did a lot of research before I purchased my skids. The RSGs were not the cheapest but in my opinion, after I factored in shipping to my front door, they were the best value and had all the features I wanted.

Another company that I liked a lot was BudBuilt out East. I liked their sliders a lot but the shipping all the way across the country took them out of the competition for me.

 

Yes you have to drop the gas tank which I’m not happy about and have to drill a couple holes. I’m going to get them installed elsewhere which is going to eat up the savings pretty quick, but I didn’t want to wait weeks or months to get them and then have to spend the extra time and money to get them powder coated.

 

What kind of skid or sliders requires dropping the gas tank? And drilling holes??

I just want to know so I can avoid that manufacturer completely.

Wow! What an awful design!

My RSG were $914 powdercoated and delivered and used existing holes. They're rock solid. I hope I never have to drill a hole in my truck.

 

Drilling a hole in the frame is no big deal. There are already many of them, but the gas tank is my issue, but I didn’t want wait months to get them installed.

 

Maybe not. But, when there is an alternative, I will avoid it.

There are many good options that don't require it, so I can't see any reason to do so.

If I was OK with permanently altering my frame, I would have gotten weld-ons and saved some money.

I, too, wanted the Shrockworks for the price, quality, closeness for shipping, and the look of them. After watching the video, I decided the RSG were worth the extra $$ (to me), as the installation looks to be so much simpler than the Shrockworks installation. RSG mounts only to threaded holes already in the frame. The SW sliders require some drilling on the passenger side. Plus, in the video, the "stick nuts" (which arrived already rusty, BTW, shame on SW. Installer had to paint those first) look like a PITA to deal with.

While the installer in the video makes a point to say the SW sliders mount to the side and bottom of the frame, which is a stronger way of mounting than "some of the other sliders out there", he fails to mention the fact that they only have 2 mounting arms vs. 4, like most of the others out there (including RSG). All the factors added together made the RSG sliders worth the price difference to me.

 

I have RSG and did not drill a single hole.

 

believe me I agree, but at the time I couldn’t find any in stock. I wanted them right away. The only thing that I don’t like is the gas tank dropping. You don’t have to drill if you don’t want to.

Sorry, I meant to say the Shrockworks required drilling. You replied before I caught my wording error and edited the post...no drilling needed with RSG.

 

Just installed these today. Took about 4 hours and had to remove gas tank skid and front tank strap. Very happy with them so far.
