I wasn’t aware of this. So the Pro only has Fox shocks in the front? Would you recommend i buy an SR5 Premium and then go install an ARB air locker and do some after market suspension instead of the Pro? Reason i ask is, the Pro prices are pretty obscene now and I don’t get how that weird tube rack is useful.

I think that if you're willing and able to do your own suspension you'll get a lot more bang for your buck that way. Just my opinion. Unless you really want the PRO rack and logos.

I’m a pretty pragmatic person and don’t care about the badge. I don’t want a fake hood scoop or overpriced crap. I just want a quality reliable 4wd suv that’ll be my off road focused vehicle to complement my 19 Passport.

Then I would definitely go the SR5 route.

OR, you could get an OFF-Road and have the locker, lever shift transfer case, multi terrain, etc and just add shocks and tires. That would still be significantly less expensive than a PRO and you'd have everything good about the PRO without the price tag.

I didn’t realize that SR5’s don’t have a transfer case. So they only offer a brake based traction system? I knew they don’t offer a read locking differential. Sounds like the ORP is the way to go. It’s a shame it lacks auto temperature control but i would probably rather get over that than spend 8k more.

They have a transfer case, but I believe it is controlled by a rotary switch on the dash. I have to double check this. I could be wrong

The Off Road trim has some multi-terrain/crawl control features that the SR5 doesn't. These combined with the locker adds roughly $3,500 to the OR price tag.

If you're a pragmatic person get an SR5 and add a locker. It will be just as capable as the Off-road trim, IMO.

Edit: BTW, the SR5 does have a transfer case. It has a knob to shift into 4wd rather than a lever.

I would argue that the MTS and Crawl control are valuable tools as well. They aren't there just for show.

Fair enough. Depends on the type of terrain you typically drive in.

For me, an extra $3,500 wasn't worth it. I figured a locker and A-trac would get me anywhere an Off Road could go.

But like I said, that's for my uses. Yours may vary.

It brings up an interesting question though:

Let's say you have an SR5 with a locker vs. and OR.

Is there anywhere the OR could go that the SR5 couldn't?

True. I might never actually need them. But, I think of them as good tools to have. I have used MTS but I'm not sure if I really needed to.

Maybe. It's hard to say for sure. I think of CC as a tool for getting un-stuck if nothing else.

The manual transfer case is worth 3.5k alone IMO

To me they were. I don't know if I really need them. But, it's not a significant amount of money compared to the price of the vehicle. I figured that I would rather spend a little more and get everything I wanted.

Besides that, it's actually only $1900...

I just sat in an ORP at a dealer. The interior feels nicer than I expected. They quoted 43 plus tax and title. I would guess I can do better. Manager says the KDSS makes no difference in on road body roll. What say the good people here?

My bad. My numbers have been all off this week for some reason.

I wen't back to check what I was looking at and discovered I was comparing a 2wd SR5 to the OR.

    I'll do better, I promise. :)

You can definitely do better. I realize MSRP has jumped a bit, but I got my '19 ORP with KDSS for $38.6K.

I recommend going on Toyota's website and requesting a quote from a local dealer. I shopped multiple dealers to get this price.

    Agreed on both points.

I do absolutely love the way my 4runner handles (for a brick)!

But, it could absolutely fail. I hope it won't.

I recommend driving both and see if you notice the difference. Then, decide if it's worth it to you.

I drove down a side street and swerved back and forth and felt like the KDSS equipped 4runner was a little more composed. Your results may vary.

BTW, this makes an OR a lot more reasonable to me.

Let's say you add a locker to an SR5. How much is that, $1000-$1,500 installed?

    So you're paying somewhere between $400 - $900 for the MT/CC functions.

Using the toyota.com website, it looks like a ORP with KDSS and sunroof including delivery is $46,065 versus $42,190 for the SR5 Premium. The only difference is crawl control and hill start assist control. So, almost 4k for the locker and off-roading software.

Yes, I agree -- an ARB air locker is 1k plus labor to install it. If that's 1,500 then the difference is 2500$ for the off road software and it's possible that the vehicle will depreciate on a shallower curve because it has that.

    What if you skip KDSS?

You can get about $4K off MSRP if you shop around. Or, at least that's what I read and about what I got.

You're going to get the best deal if you take dealer stock VS ordering special. Of course, there are always exceptions.

Also, is that an SR5 Premium with a moonroof?

I messed up in the above. For some strange reason I compared ORP with KDSS and sunroof to SR5P with sunroof. But, that's dumb. A more apt comparison is ORP with sunroof, which is $43,570 and thus the difference is only $1,380. And that means, ORP is worth it, which you all were already well aware of :).

OK guys I have basically first hand information on what the gen 6 will be like. My buddy's maid's husband works as a gardener for a guy who's son once worked as a lot hand at a local dealer. He said the 6th gen 4Runner will be unibody construction with 4 wheel independent suspension and McPherson struts. They are moving to an electronically controlled AWD system that recognizes when you need AWD and engages it for you. No pesky buttons to push or levers to pull. It will be powered by an electric/solar/hybrid 1.6 turbo which will have the R16 badge similar to the old R22. The roof will be one large solar panel to help charge the batteries (unknown how many at this time) It will be backed by a 12 speed auto. It is expected to get 40 mpg in gasoline mode and 60+ MPG in electric so it has a 12 gallon tank and other "weight saving measures" whatever that means but you can probably expect more plastic.

    Or maybe not.
