    I have a 2011 4Runner Limited and the suspension needs to be replaced. The dealer wants $6k to replace it. $3k to unplug the reservoir system and just replace with regular shocks. I cannot afford either option, and I’m not a mechanic. Any advice?

    What components are they saying needs replacement? 6k is a lot of money for shocks and springs.

    Yeah I know!
    They want to replace the shocks, and the reservoir system for them. I don’t know where they get that price from? The shocks are leaking.

    You should be able to get some coilovers from rock auto for $125 each. And rear shocks for $50 each. Find an independent suspension shop and have them installed for $500-700, depending on where you are located.

    Sounds like you have kdss. They can eliminate that from the equation. You should be able to get the whole thing done for $1000-1200.

    Sounds more like XREAS.

    KDSS should never need maintenance, and is separate from the shock absorbers.

    Limited model. XREAS. Expensive system to replace back to factory spec. As previously mentioned, lots of options to eliminate XREAS system and put conventional suspension.

    It’s a limited so the XREAS system which is cross linked components. The front driver shock has a line connecting it to the rear pass shock and vice versa for the other side.

    Options are, how much do you want to spend? Want OE height? Bilstein is a good options.

    Want a lift? $3500 or so for Kings or $1100 or so for Old Man Emu.

    Hey fellas,
    I went to Pepboys and had them disconnect the flexible lines from the XREAS shocks. Then I had them install normal off-road shocks. My Runner suspension works fine; and there’s no warnings on my dashboard display as there are no electrical connections or vacuum connections. I saved thousands from what the dealer quoted me, and I was able to get better quality off-road shocks from the money I saved. I never have to worry about XREAS again.

    Too many mods and too much money
    I eliminated my xreas at 70k miles not for a failure, but because I was not impressed with it at all, and wanted to do a lift and tires. I have a feeling the system is not only expensive, it's probably a PIA to set up properly even for a competent service dept. The high costs dealers are charging are most likely because they don't want to mess with a flawed system that's a difficult install on top of that. Especially when most of us go with decent low cost aftermarket shocks and are happier anyway. 3k to disconnect and install conventional shocks is ludicrous though.
