I've got a buddy with one and he absolutely loves it. He went with the Magnusson $6K option (3 year warranty)

That is the S/C not a turbo, for clarification.

Go with a bolt on supercharger kit if you must have more power. A turbo kit is going to be nothing but headache... coming from the GM world where there's multiple vendors who fabricate many kits for the Silverados and Sierras and many forum members run them. A supercharger kit will be perfect for daily driver usage and you'll most likely have zero issues with any components on it.

As for mpg.. it all depends on how much you stay out of the boost

All this goes out the window though if you're a good fabricator or know of one... And don't mind making frequent tweaks to your ecu and kit.... In which case definitely go for it :)

not sure the exact increase, but it does help gas mileage. you're creating a more efficient engine

Superchargers provide more oxygen than any normal intake. More oxygen allows for greater combustion potential, correct? In an internal combustion engine if you provide more oxygen or air to the combustion chamber to burn fuel, the flame will have higher energy which in turn expand quicker as the fuel and air mixture is compressed in the combustion chamber ultimately resulting in better power stroke.

I'm curious what your reasoning is for opposing my statement?

Its a lot more than just more air.

Superchargers load the engine down as it is belt driven.

You are not always in boost under normal driving.

You also need more fuel to go along with the air for a bigger boom.

I haven't had experience from supercharging a 4R but my 06 TBSS was supercharged. When I was able to resist and not drive like a mad man between stop signs for a whole tank I did not see any MPG gains.

Can you see gains maybe. But you don't add a S/C to drive like a 80 year old either.

I have yet to see a turbo set up on a 5th gen. I hope I will one day, but most are happy with off the shelf parts for that trip to the local coffee shop or food store. With the amount of 5th gens sold, there is little in performance mods out there. I have yet to see anyone talk of porting heads, adding cams or boring out a block. Granted I'm not a fanboy.

It’s the magical stoichiometric ratio of 14.7:1 of air to fuel. If you push more air into the engine with no change in fuel you create a lean condition.

This is why the 3.4l 5VZ-FE had the 7th injector with the supercharger.

You need to upgrade the fuel injectors and fuel pump to account for the increased air volume. This in turn negates any real world fuel economy gains.

It seems like a turbo setup would be pretty complicated compared to a supercharger. There are a few (I think) supercharger kits available.

Yea I think the magnuson supercharger is the best fit...since they were already making them for TRD back in the day, magnuson know what they are doing... as complicated as TC get... I want one :(
Maybe ill just have to get a better job and then a second car :notsure:

I don't see it being popular enough for anyone to make a kit. I would think that a supercharger would offer more usable power for towing, etc.

    However...

^^^^THIS is always an option. If you don't have the necessary tools and/or skills, you can probably find a tuner shop willing to fabricate something.

Please start a build thread here if you decide to do it!

Largest issue i see with bolting on power to a 5th gen is the tune. I have read more then one person looking for a custom tune, but only found 1 or 2 basic box tunes. I'm guessing thats why the SC's make so little.

Dyno time is expensive. I don't know very many people that are trying to run quarter miles in their 5th gens. Most people are content with adding a healthy gob of low-end torque with minimal fuss, and leaving it at that.

The SC adds almost a 100 hp. An yes the Magnuson can make more power than that but that is not the purpose of the supercharger on a 4Runner. Adding almost 100 hp with no reliability issues longterm is pretty inviting. Wish it was a little cheaper.

Finding someone that will fabricate something - I got that
money to fund this project - I don't got that...still paying off student loan :ballchain:
but yea, that low-end torque is something this truck needs...well torque, in general, is something this truck needs
by the time i have the money to fund a turbo creation for 5th gen, we will probably be at 7th gen lol and HOPEFULLY, someone has done it already

someone should do a kickstarter for T/C lol ... just want that nice pop and blow off valve but oh well
    unaffordable S/C it is

Tracking all, doesn't mean people don't want to do it and shops that can/will tune the 5th gen are hard to come by.

Honestly don't understand why anyone would choose a turbo over a supercharger in a truck application? Power at higher rpm (turbo) vs. power at just about every rpm range (SC). Makes no sense to choose a turbo in this application. An the 4.0 is already pre-engineered for a supercharger. The Magnuson charger we can all buy was a factory option at one point (same warranty as the standard motor option) and does nothing to decrease the reliability of the motor. Why try and re-invent the wheel trying to adapt a turbo kit to it which will probably end up costing more than the SC?
