BF Goodrich All Terrain A/T KO2's

Is there an issue with mounting BF Goodrich All Terrain A/T KO2 tires on a 2015 4Runner Trail? Whenever I go to the site of a major tire retailer and input the car data the A/T's never show up as an option. I have 7.5" wide rims and I contacted BF Goodrich and they said that the tire is fine on that rim. Any thoughts?

 

Yo if the tire company said it's good, it's good.

My best guess is that the retailer doesn't say the fitment is no good because it's not listed for the 4Runner for load, or speed index, or something random like that. They just don't want to get sued so they go by the book for OEM fitment.

 

I had stock size KO2's on the off-road wheels, and now on aftermarket wheels. No issues whatsoever, other than some slight rubbing due to a negative offset on the new wheels.

I'm running the C load rated version.

 

Works like a charm.

That's what I run. Very good tires. I do have one that doesn't balance so well though.

 

I have 275 KO2's on the black TuRD wheels and there's no rubbing or anything (2018 ORP)

and they look and perform great!

Yeah that tire definitely has a drinking problem. An pretty funny cuz that is the one that doesn't balance well. Can't wait until it gets thrown to the back again.

That’s what I run also. They’re great in the summer. Hey, is that a frontrunner roof rack?

 

It will fit, but just about any A/T will be a better choice.

 

That would depend on how you use your 4runner.

For vehicles that rarely leave the pavement, I would agree. Not 100%, though, as there are some AT's out there that probably aren't very good for anything.

For my uses, there are no better choices that I'm aware of.

Dollar for dollar, i could see a good argument for the Falken at3's. Other than that, any other tires that measure up are generally more expensive than the BFG's.

So what is your oddly specific use that a tire with poor wet traction, terrible braking, bad mud traction, reasonable snow performance, good dirt traction, that’s undersized from its specs, with tread blocks that chip away, and have a widely known tendency to not balance is the best choice available?

It's funny how everyone I know that actually HAS KO2's is totally happy with them.

It's also weird how I've put 24K on mine in snow, rain, rocks and gravel, and they still look almost new. I've driven in all kinds of weather and had no issues. I've even made an idiot move in the rain that I was sure was going to land me in a ditch, and they held on.

I have also driven enough miles in enough different situations to be convinced that anyone bitching about their wet traction was probably driving too fast for conditions.

There are surely better AT's for rain. And some are better for snow. And some are better for mud. But, as a do-it-all tire, i can't think of a better tire.

So, what magical tire are you aware of that's better in all of these situations? I'm all ears.

That was my firsthand experience with K02s living in Colorado. I had K02s and replaced them early with Ridge Grapplers because they were terrible. The Ridge Grapplers are better in every scenario except snow. Next I’m going to try the Wildpeak AT3W.

 

So, you personally experienced all of those problems? Crazy!

Can you give a specific example of how you suddenly lost control in the rain?

What PSI were you running? What load range? And, are you 100% positive that they were KO2's and not KO's, as The KO2 only came out a year or two before the Nittos

 

If by "problems" you mean characteristics of the tires than yes I personally experienced all those problems. I did not say I suddenly lost control in the rain, I don't drive like an asshole for that to be the case, I said they had poor wet traction and I base that the frequency in which ABS would kick on under surprising light braking. ABS activation was never an issue with Ridge Grapplers or factory tires. I chalk tested and experimented with pressures, I settled on 34 psi for normal day to day use. E rated tires, same as my Ridge Grapplers. They were not bad when brand new but the performance fell off amazingly fast. It's funny that you comment on the "K02 haters handbook" but you've never questioned why disliking them is so common? From your point of view nobody who has them dislikes them, in my point of view nobody who has them and likes them knows any better, whether they don't put them to us, they don't have any sense of reference to compare against, or they simply like the look and spent the money so they are best because they want to have the best.

Yes I'm sure they were K02s and as I said, I replaced them a bit early with about 7/32nds of inch of tread left because I wasn't happy with them and I was tired of fighting vibrations.

 

If the KO2's had rain grooves, I think they'd be a much better tire.

I liked them in everything except for the rain.....and more specifically puddles/standing water situations. The random tread pattern is just not suitable for those situations and has a tendency to hydroplane over standing water rather than cut through it. Since we can experience very sudden, intense rain and our roads have a hard time draining, an A/T that has rain grooves is a much better choice for me and the area I live in.

 

I have a hard time calling something that only a small percentage of people experience a "characteristic" of the tire.

It's NOT common when compared to the number of people who are satisfied with the tires. And, I have NO issue with anyone disliking them, or even criticising them for their weaknesses. But, to call them "terrible" and say that any other AT is a better choice is plain ignorant.

I've driven over a half million miles on good tires and bad, so I'd say that I know enough.

Just because you don't like something doesn't make it bad. They're consistently one of the top rated all terrains available. If they were anywhere near as terrible as you claim, they would have been redesigned by now.

I bought them based on excellent user reviews, and reputation. I drive the shit out of my truck and they consistently perform well.

You mentioned that yours were E rated. Maybe that has something to do with it? Maybe the E rated tires used a harder tread compound.

Having said all of this, I am also considering the Falkens for my next set. This is mostly due to price, and the fact that I have to buy tires every other year due to driving so much.

 

K02s are garbage that get by riding the coat tails of the K0s popularity and decades of proven performance. The K0s were great tire in their time but after decades they fell behind the competition, the K02 was supposed to fix that and didn’t. Popular garbage is still garbage, I’m sorry if that offends you.

 

Tires that perform as well as this are not garbage.

I'm not offended. I think it's hilarious that you somehow think you know better than everyone else.

There are plenty of people all over the country enjoying them. Just because a handful of people don't like them doesn't change that.

 

How is it me thinking I know better than everyone else when, again, you said what I experienced was straight out of the K02 Haters Handbook.... because it’s the same experience so many others have had.

I bought then for the same reasons you mentions above and they fell well short of expectations.

There are also plenty of people all over the country enjoying their 3 cylinder 75hp Mitsubishi Mirage, that doesn’t mean anything to me.
