I'm looking to upgrade the speakers in my 2019 off-road premium. The front door speakers are the highest priority as the bass from the OEM speakers is not great.

I realize that no 6×9 will replace a good subwoofer, but I don't want to have a sub taking up space in the cargo area. My goal is to get the most out of the stock head unit for now, and possibly upgrade that later.

I landed on the JL's because of the high efficiency rating. I assume that the stock deck only makes a few watts per channel. I'd like to get the most out of it.

So, is anyone using these JL's in their 4runner, with the stock deck? And, how do they compare to the stock speakers?

    Thanks for looking!

Here are two choices, my preference is the Focal.

    Thanks for the reply!

I was eyeing up the focals, but something about them had turned me off. Maybe the price, not sure.

I thought I had read that the Power Bass speakers, ironically, lacked bass.

I'm looking for speakers with high efficiency ratings and good low frequency extension.

Have you used either of those speakers?

I have used Focal speakers in my last vehicle, and loved them. You can call Crutchfield and get the info. & specs. I have heard good reviews on the 4-Runner kit from Focal.

They look nice, but not $200 nicer than the JL's. The JL's have better low frequency extension, based on the specs. Thanks for the suggestion, though!

I have the 'regular" SR5 and have been fairly impressed with the sound system, particularly the low-end. Might be my middle-aged ears though....back in the day, I had an Accord and later a Monte Carlo with half the Rockford Fosgate catalog on board. Good times. Might have to stalk this thread....

The sound is not bad. I just notice that the bass is a bit wimpy.

    Rockford Fosgate is good stuff.

I'm tempted to just pull the trigger on the JL's and hope for the best. They have to be better than the stock speakers.

What do we have for stock speakers? (mine is a 2019 also) or are they generic 'Toyota" speakers?

I guess I'm not really sure. I just assume they're the same flimsy speakers my Tacoma had.

Funny, Amazon list them as fitting. With a review saying to get the trim ring.

I'm not seeing a way to check fit on Amazon. How are you seeing that?

If I can find the adapters on Amazon, I'll order them tonight and try to install them next weekend.

I'll be taking a long road trip soon, so I'd love to have upgraded speakers before I go. I should be able to post a review by the time I reach Florida.

Any aftermarket speaker will be an improvement over the stock speakers and their US quarter sized magnet.

I haven't looked at the 4runner speakers, but based on your description it sounds like they're the same as my 2015 Tacoma had. The whole thing weighs about .5oz:D

That's good new, as I can probably expect a similar improvement to what I experienced in the Tacoma. I replaced the speakers with some middle of the road JBL's and the improvement was drastic.

I just need to find the right adapters and I'm going for it.:spending:

Post up what you end up with. I have so far only replaced the small dash speakers and just that made quite a difference.

What did you put in the dash? I might as well look into that while I'm at it.

Now I just need to figure out if I'm going to need any wiring adapers.

Edit: ordered adapters. Although I think there might be more to it, as I've read that the Toyota crossovers are set up weird. I'm guessing I'll just bypass their crossover, though.

It brings up what ever car you have selected in "your garage". Supposed to let you know proper part listings for said vic. Doesn't always work so well.

I ended up looking up the adapters on Crutchfield.com, but ordered from Amazon. It was mostly due to laziness, as it's just easier to order through Amazon.

I'm going install next weekend. I'm not sure how much break in they require, but one review had said that the sound improved after some break-in.

I too installed the Subaru/Kicker tweeters. They made a huge difference. Almost enough that as much as I want to spend a bunch of money upgrading my speakers, it almost sounds.... “good enough”!

That's funny cuz that is exactly why I have not bought any other speakers since the Suby tweets. It sounds "good enough" and I have used the money for other things.

The JL's are a component system, so the tweeters are separate from the woofers. I'm thinking that I can put the woofers in the door, and the tweeters in the dash corners. I'm not sure if they'll fit, but I'm hoping to be able to fashion some sort of brackets for them.

You can find brackets on tacotunes for the tweeters. If you dont want to play with fabrication.

Never been a huge base guy. Thinking of doing three ways in the front doors, two ways in the rear and hatch. Already did the two ways in the dash. This will be step one, step two will be a small amp. Trying not to melt the credit card to fast.

I like bass, but only when it's proportionate. I upgraded the 6×9's in my Tacoma and was extremely satisfied with the bass.

    Two more days..

I'll probably update with an initial review over the weekend.

I went full on with the OEM Audio + Reference 500 system. Cost a pretty penny but the sound is very good, while leaving everything appearing stock-ish.

Just their speakers are quite a bit less, but stock power:
