Got in my 1999 4runner sr5 and put the key in to turn the car on and all of a sudden my dashboard went dim and wouldn't even crank or start(almost like the battery was dead. Battery is a year old)....Tried a few more times and finally it started up. Let it warm up for a few minutes then went to put it in drive and it wouldn't move forward unless I put a lot of throttle behind it. Reverse, 2nd gear, and L worked just fine. Shifted back and forth a couple times and it finally started moving forward like normal. Does anyone have any idea what the hell caused this? I'm stumped. Thanks in advance

Got it started and ran fine on the way to work. Let it sit for 3 or 4 hours and went to lunch and started up and ran like a champ. Went to put my key to on position and no electric came on. Completely 100% dead. Wont crank, no lights work, dashboard is blank.. checked battery cables they were not lose at all. I AM stumped

corrosion on the battery terminals? I've seen the crud get in places that one wouldn't think it would. Also, I'm new to the 4Runner platform, but during my many foolish years of driving Chevy Blazers, weird stuff like this could be chalked up to a bad ignition switch (actually not a switch but a wiring harness). I don't know if there's any similarity in the Toyota universe.

I took the terminals off and there was corrosion on inside of cables where I couldnt see at first. That was the problem.. fired right up after I cleaned it up. Thanks for the suggestion!!

FYI, if they corrode up again, the cables are corroding internally and you have to replace a chunk of the wire with a new terminal.
