Chewed wiring.

Need help on how to replace fuel injector wire connectors. Rats chewed through few connections. Can someone please explain how to replace the connector or if I need to order new. As I was looking at the wiring for each injector I noticed the wire colors are not the same. What is positive and negative? I don’t want to reverse the wiring for obvious reasons. Thanks in advance

I was in the garage this morning while me wife was moving the runner and noticed the idle sounded weird and as I turned I saw a frikin massive rat hop down and took off.

With recent cold weather, I notice rodent droppings on top of the engine cover. May need to set traps out near the Tacoma. LOL! My 4runner is in parked in the garage.

 

Thanks Toyota for converting to soy-based wire cladding. They should have added rat poison to the recipe. I dealt with that on my brand new with 200 miles 4R.

looks like 2 for sure but may need to to take apart little more to check others. Scan tool showed cylinder 2 and 3 are misfiring.

 

It’s just a matter of time before they start chewing.

 

Use Irish Springs soap and dryer sheets to keep rodents away.

Anyone got any tips on how to get to the connector under the intake manifold (driver side closest to firewall) need tips on how to remove intake manifold.

 

Can you describe how and where to put the soap and fabric softener?

 

Kinda a pain in the ass. Mother fuckers targeted only the fuel injector connectors. 5/6 injectors have chew marks.

 

That sucks. Same happened to my FJ a couple years ago and like you it was the injector wiing.
I started putting Fresh Cab under the hoods of all my vehicles. Motorhome, motorcycles, generator....
It smells decent and it can be stuck between things under the hood without moving around while driving.

 

This happened to the wiring harness of my Tundra this year. Pretty sure it was squirrels. I hadn't used the truck in 2 weeks and one day I tried to use it and the whole dash lit up like a christmas tree. All kinds of lights flashing. Long story short - rodent damage is covered under your comprehensive portion of the auto insurance. Comp is one I always lower the deductible to $250 because it has no real impact to premiums. Added bonus - comp claims don't impact your premiums either. I got mine fixed by the dealership for $250. They repaired the harness (bill was $1500) if they would have had to replace the harness would have cost $6000. All the reason you need to pay insurance.

 

That’s good to know! The main reason I tackled it myself is because my dealership is about 20 miles from where I live and I’m scared to drive it with only 4 cylinders almost 3. I don’t know if catalytic converters would fall under the same category lol

 

Once I realized what was going on I didn't drive the truck anymore. Towing was also covered under insurance.

MixFlip just posted this video a couple of days ago. Doesn’t help your current situation but may prevent any further destruction. I’m not affiliated with the company nor do I have any experience with their product. Saw your thread and saw the video and thought it might be of help.

 

I think there is enough there to clean up and solder...first put on a "shrink tube" so after solder you can slip the shrink tube over the solder connection and heat it up...I always use a torch to shrink but a floor laying tile heater...maybe your wife's hair drier would work...and of course a lighter...just don't get too close.

 

Linda is right about the Irish Spring soap too!!! One of the girls I work with used this in their camper over the winter just laying pieces around in corners etc...no mice...or rats...it works Great!!!

 

I replaced 3 connectors so far waiting for my local auto parts store to bring in more connectors today. I don’t own a solder so I went with butt splice connectors. I crimped the connectors and made sure they weren’t loose then taped the two wires and finally put 3/8 wire conduit around it. I know some people prefer to solder but if I ever have to redo any of the connectors I’ll invest in a soldering tool. Overall it isn’t too bad lol I’mma a YouTube mechanic and couldn’t find anything on removing the intake manifold and throttle body. Once you look around it isn’t hard just removed couple hoses/ brackets and it comes off.

I have not tried it yet but I read on Amazon that the Exterminators Choice Rodent Defense might not work. One of the reviewers said to use the soap and fabric softeners. There must be something to it because when we bought our motorhome the previous owners had dryer sheets all over the place, under the sofa and under the bed. You can try taking one of the dryer sheets and tie in a knot around your wires. Cut up the soap and put pieces in that box that is to the left of the engine compartment.

 

You should be able to buy aftermarket pig tails and splice them in, or you could repin the connector housings with new terminals for cheap (that’s the route I’d take).

 

irish spring a mint smell keeps rodents out. I put in a cloth bag .. used a knife to make soap chips in the bag. also I put silicone spray on the wiring .. rodents do not like silicone on a chew item..
the wiring repair should be soldering and a heat shrink tube covering.a butt splice inside the vehicle can work for several years.. outside butt connectors will corrode and falloff.
HEAT SHRINK WIRING COVER USE A SMALL CIG LIGHTER .. SOLDER TO USE SHOULD BE SILVER SOLDER WITH ROSEN CORE.

True. It varies from "works great!" to "totally ineffective"...in my case it's pretty much an experiment, as I'd bet the farm that my chewed wire happened in transit from Japan or the port, as I don't have rodents around.
