Suspension questions

i am thinking about changing all 4 shocks but use the OEM springs maybe level the rig

i know that the 4runner front driver side comes with more of preload on the spring why is that? and when i change the shocks out do i need to do the same thing: add the extra preload on the spring? or just set it at the same point on both sides?

i read about people getting a lean after doing a lift; i don't want that.

Some kits will include a small spacer for the driver's side lean (I think).

If you're looking to raise the front and retain the original springs, Bilstein 5100's are a popular option. There are other options as well. Check out some of the threads in the suspension section. There's plenty of reading material to get some ideas.

 

Measure your truck with a full gas tank on flat ground as it sits right now. If you have lean now, then yes, you'll want to set the drivers side Bilstein 5100 / Eibach adjustable shock or whatever you end up going with on the next setting up. If it doesn't lean now, it shouldn't lean after your lift......unless you have KDSS. Some people with KDSS report lean after a lift due to the system not re-adjusting after the height changes.

4runner lean is different with my experience. Stock my 19 had 1/2" lean on
Rear, 3/8" in the front.
My 20 is even in the front and 3/4 in the rear.

 

Interesting....are all vehicles set up like this? never knew...

 

I have trim packers front and rear on the drivers side with my suspension replacement and the 4 sits pretty level. So before you only replace the shocks, what are your plans for the future? Are you going to be carrying weight, off roading? Or just used as a daily? You may want to replace the suspension completely versus paying to disassemble the coil overs now and only replacing the shocks. This will save some money if you plan to completely replace the suspension in the future.

The stock springs will only get more spongy as time goes on. I feel Toyota skimps on suspension and I have replaced it early on just about every Toyota I have owned.

i am thinking just the shocks but your right i might go with the coils also pay once for the install, but I do not want that much of lift just the nose to come up to level it some what

 

Yes Trim packers are the name OME gives them but I got everything through Wheelers. I am probably partial because this is what I have, but you should check out the Eibach PRO kit. It's a lot of bang for the money. If you think you want to go this way Call Wheelers and they can set you up with what you need. I used email and my salesman was very helpful after I told him what my plans were for the 4. They can also assemble the front coil overs for you. It's also good to wait until they have a sale or ask them if they have any specials going on. Good luck with your decision. It took me a long time to make the decision cuz there are a lot of options out there, but I love my setup and it didn't cost me thousands of dollars.

For your situation, I wouldn't worry about setting the front shocks on a different setting. Put both of them on the same setting.

If the rear bothers you, you could add a spacer to the LR coil. But you're only leaning 1/4" and that's with a full tank. I'd be willing to bet you aren't running a full tank all the time. Personally, I wouldn't mess with it, but to each their own.

 

Or just add Bilsteins or Eibachs to the front only and put them on the first setting if all you want to do is level it. Leave the rest alone.
