Are the TRD Offroad rims better than SR5?

Loving these new wheels. I didn’t find any marks on the outside. The only mark is in the inside from removing the tire. They are practically brand new. Hell my wife was even surprised how nice they look in general.

My set of Michelin’s have 40k on them so I am not really sure I what to reuse them. I think I rather sell the tire/rims as a package and put new tires on those beautiful rims. Great tire but I am at about half life and one tire has a shell casing in it (5years or mileage warranty is the longest I will ever use a tire). It doesn’t leak but it cannot be repaired. And I wouldn’t mind a better tire in the snow...I’ve been researching like crazy. A lot of the newer tires seem like a big improvement over AT tires of the past...like the General ATX and Cooper AT3 4s. I am not necessarily interested in Offroad ability but rain/ice/snow abilities without going to a dedicated winter tire.

Would not mind hearing some opinions...

 

I've already decided on Michelin Defenders when these Dunflops wear out.

No! don't do it, they are fugly as hell!

 

That's quite subjective. Think it depends on the person. I just put them on a Sequoia from my 4Runner and they look much nicer than the original take offs.

 

I agree...I had black FN wheels on my gray Tacoma and was never in love with them because I discovered I just don’t like super dark wheels on a dark vehicle. But a lot of other people do... And in my opinion the 5th gen 4Runners have had some of the best looking rims to date among Toyota trucks. I prefer OEM wheels because the hold up better to the salty roads in NY and they usually clean up very well with minimal maintenance.

 

My opinion on the tires:

Don't ruin the ride with a D or E rated tire. You'll be much happier with the way a P-rated tire rides on the road. C-rated is probably fine. Keep tire weight in mind when going up in tire size. Those General Grabbers are heavy.

Check out the new Firestone Destination A/Ts......the one's that are winter rated with the snowflake emblem. They are a less aggressive A/T tire and i know they are among the lightest 285s on the market (42 lbs for the p-rated). Not sure how they handle in the snow however. You'll have to read the reviews.

 

Oh absolutely...I am not going to use at LT even in C load. Been there done that and am going to keep the tire weight within 3 pounds of the factory weight. Weight and height are are a killer with tires.

 

Sorry one more quick question for you guys that swapped out SR5 rims for Trail rims. I noticed my SR5 rims have a metal valve stem but the Trail/Offroad has a rubber one. These were brand new takeoffs. Are those metal valves/TPMS sensors able to be used in the trail rims? I search for different part numbers for the valves but it seems they are the same across the board (models/years). Is it possible the seller just put them in for protection?? I am emailing the seller as well..

 

Yes they used my stems and TPMS from the SR5's in the Trail wheels.

Finally got around to installing them and I am super happy. It gives the truck a much tougher look. I ended up just using my Michelin’s because even the mechanic said they looked to be in unbelievable shape for having 40k. But I did get rid of the whitewalls which I thought made it look very grandpa ish. I should start a build thread called W.T.B. Offroad

Looks good! I like the looks of the pro rim but cleaning them was a pain. Trail rims are growing on me

 

Dang! You're killing me. I need those Eibach shocks!! Very nice.

 

Just do it! They are great shocks for the money and worth the extra cost over the Bilstein 5100’s. They make a huge difference in the looks department even at the 1 inch setting. I was going back and forth for months and one day I just figured what the hell. Never looked back from there.

 

I'll likely get them soon. I've been looking for an install shop in Abq that won't gouge me price-wise, but the last possibility I checked fizzled out. I have a couple more options to look into, or find someone here that's willing to help out.

BTW, the OR wheels look great. Huge difference.

 

Thanks! I paid 300 for install and it was an extra 100 bucks for an alignment from Toyota. It was a little pricey but I don’t have the skill set (I am a low level DIYer/fluid changes, brakes, spark plugs, tire rotations) or proper tools (50% of the battle in my opinion). I could have done the rear shocks but I wasn’t saving much money. It’s always important to debate the time vs money thing.
