Going over 10k miles before oil change?

    From what I’ve gathered the vehicle comes from the factory with synthetic. Dealer won’t bring it in for the free oil change under 10k. From my experience with my cammed GTO, running over 5k on the same oil is sacrilegious. Should i ignore the dealer's interval and change it myself or is this normal?

    I’m sure it’s dumb but thanks anyway.

    man it’s up to you. Oil analysis show the oil in our trucks is good even over 10k. That’s just how the new engines are being designed.
    I personally did my initial change at around 6k, and will do 7500 mile intervals since my driving is so mixed with traffic.

    I live in the middle of nowhere near a military base so I have nothing by highway luckily. My next question is about shearing. Odometer just rolled 6800 and I bought it in March. Time to rotate?

    Rotate tires every 5. Especially important the more aggressive the tread is.

    I’m sure it’s overkill, but I change the oil and filter as well as rotate the tires every 5000 miles.

    In all honesty OP 10k intervals with 0w20 are perfect for 95% of the 5th gen 4Runners in use. Now if you tow 5000 pounds everyday or do serious off-roading all year...5k intervals are probably better. 5th gen motor failures are very uncommon and many have very high mileage. I believe Toyota knows better than the vast majority of internet posters including myself. I personally stick with 1 year or 10k and use alleged higher quality oils (Amsoil Signature Series/TGMO/Mobil 1 Extend Protection).

    And brother it’s not dumb...this is a Toyota truck forum. We are all affectionatos and love talking about this stuff.

    But be forewarned oil threads can get sideways real quick...

    How could you even compare a Toyota to a dodge? It’s the bearing tolerances. 10k is fine.....

    There are many forum members that have sent in to BlackStone for oil analysis, and so far everything points to 10,000 is fine. Unless extreme conditions.

    Synthetic oils don't oxidize at "normal" engine temps.
    As long as you drive it long enough to drive the water off and keep a filter on it it is fine. I use oil analysis to determine changes and average 35k. I use Mobil1 extended life filters abd change them every 7k.

    I was changing at 10-12K before it was 'cool' (since at least 1998 or so). Never had any engine issues, even with my Chevy products.

    I started oil analysis when I was running home grown propane injection on an 83 VW jetta (long story). Id change the oil and it was as clean as what I was putting in....
    Sooooo engine oil analysis started for me. As synthetic oils got cheaper I pushed the interval out and just topped up the additives when I replaced the filter.
    Oil doesn't "wear out". It gets contaminated and oxidized. A good filter and synthetic oil addresses these (along with a good air filter).
    An engine in good condition with synthetic lube will go a long time between oil changes.

    10k is fine. But if you’re a person that likes to cover the bases, pay out of pocket for your first oil change at 5k and go 10k intervals after that.

    10K is fine but I did have the dealer change mine at the first 5K. It cost me $45 so I didn't mind.

    If you buy brand new Toyota it comes with the 2 year free oil change. You can have it changed when ever in those 2 years. I did it.

    My dealer would not change it "whenever". I had to pay for it if I wanted it before 10,000 miles

    That’s sucks. Because to take advantage of the 2 year oil change before it expires. I had mine done on my 17 Pro at 5000 miles and the other before it expired.

    I got them to change mine at 5k told them I had been towing a lot and was getting ready to drive cross country. Lol they did it no problem. probably have them do it again at 10k and then I will start doing it myself with Mobil 1 Syn and filters

    I always change and rotate my tires at 5000 miles...usually at that time my oil is starting to turn brown...I would watch your oil and when it gets dirty (or brown) use that as a changing guide...I'll be it will be around 5000. My wife's Volvo also says to change at 10,000...nope...not happening...I change hers every 5000 too...it's a pretty fail safe timing to change at 5000 in my opinion.

    On your 85 that would be ideal. On newer vehicles it has been proven, studied, analyzed, and proven again that these vehicles can go 10K+ miles between oil changes.

    You can send a sample in to Blackstone labs for $28 and have your oil analyzed by a third party that has no affiliation with Toyota and see for yourself if the oil is still good after 10K... color indication is not the best way of seeing whether or not the oil is bad, but if the oil is changing color quickly other things should be checked/fixed.

    Tire rotations should be at 5K though no matter the year of vehicle.

    It's really no argument from me on intervals...I have had over 250,000 miles on many of my company cars, mostly Honda civic's and the 5000 oil and rotate has worked for my cars (and trucks) for years. I know newer engines burn fuel much more efficiently which would reduce the "soot" by product into the engine for sure keeping the oil much cleaner longer...I know Backwoods you had suggested Blackstone on a previous quote and I just received their kit to use on my 2018 Civic SI and 85 4 Runner...I'm looking forward to seeing the results. It just frightens me to see my vehicles go that long without service. I'll post Blackstone's findings later...again...thanks for the tip on Blackstone.

    I do Blackstone analysis on my tacoma.....
    Shhh dont tell anyone but i go 12,500 mi between oil changes. Keep it on the down low. Oh and Blackstone said I could go 14k based on my results.

    Truck has 183k miles on it

    It all depends on the kind of driving you do. If you mash on the pedal a lot and do rabbit sprints at every stop and go then yes, 5K intervals are ideal. But if you cruise the interstate at 60mph 99% of the time then 10K or even 15K should be fine. As long as there is an API certification seal on the oil bottle, it really doesn't matter what brand it is either.

    I usually use the cheapest full synthetic that I can find around locally. And its usually Super Tech from Walmart.

    I wondered the same thing since I just bought a new 2020 and it came with the 2 year/25k Toyota Care. I will be averaging 20-25k a year as is and didn't plan on utilizing that at all. I will be doing my first change at 5k and the rest at 7500 or so.
