What will power the 6th Gen T4R? Gas, diesel or turbo gas...
To start a dedicated thread for this.
I found this article, I wanted to start another thread to not hijack his anymore.

I don't understand what this fuel is made of. It says waste material & byproduct... what the hell is that?
What does production take & how much will it cost the consumer?

Bosch claims its made out of left overs, waste, old food oil and fat waste

The 2/3 lower co2 emission is not a real thing, it’s calculated because the fuel is made out of waste which didn’t need to be produced so the bottom line is then 65%, okay that make sense!

That is interesting... I wonder what the energy content is? If it is like flexfuel the milage negates the savings.
I am a pessimist and know they don't have (us) the consumer in mind & that is concerning to me.
Will they consider it a biodiesel & only allow 20%? It is an interesting concept!
    Thanks for the news!

The negative thing is that the product is more expensive, probably the double - that would be a killer for the us market. The euro market is different, a gallon of diesel cost around $5,50 that’s including more than 50% tax
So to be very economical they should take off the tax for the eco friendly juice and Greta would be happy!

Reading the article as much as I could. It initially sounds like the tests will be on ships, emergency generators for hospitals & other places that the fuel can "stand" for a long time between usage. It also noted that it would not leave a diesel "soot trail" down the side of a white yacht.
Sounds like the top 1% can play with this fuel first. Let them experiment for once! LMAO

An 8 speed trans with the 3.5 fake atkinson Tacoma motor is my guess. If anything different than that it will have a hybrid setup like the prius.

An big oil will push back real hard on any alternative fuel for diesels. There have been ways to burn different fuels like vegetable oil in diesels for decades and it's still a niche market for the few that want to take it on. Big oil is very powerful.

I read more and more about that care diesel and so far there is a bunch of pros but sure a lot of the information is from Bosch and ToolFuel which means the praise the product but still in a fair way
So far I don’t find any information about the energy content but knowing the German market and how it works they would pronounce when it’s noticeable higher/lower. It’s definitely interesting and there is way more new inventions to bring the diesel into the 21 century

That combination sound horrible no matter how you look @ it! Why not (I know nothing about the 3.5) a 3.5 with a turbo and maybe 6 or 8 gears. Who wants a vehicle hunting between more than 8 gears. Hell, my '04 super duty skips gears depending upon engine heat & throttle input!
Toyota needs to bring it & I think they know it!

They need to bring it for the Tundra for sure but there is not much of any competition for the 4. They still sell every 4 they make and it's design is 10 years old. The Tundra is rumored to have a twin turbo six cylinder coming and possibly a diesel hybrid combo. But I doubt the last combo for many of the reasons already stated.

    Here is my prognosis:
As a global player Toyota is aware that downsizing has to be top of the list when it comes to the engine of the 6th gen, the 4runner was more a niche product for a long time but the market for adventure is growing so the market for the vehicles that can do it. Means there will be more competition and more possibilities to place the 4runner in other markets like Europe or Russia.
That in mind downsizing is even more important, the 3.5 like the Tacoma isn’t the solution and I guess they know that too. I think the little facelift of the 2020 was something to buy more time, time for another facelift until the 6th gen is ready. why else they didnt go all the way with led headlight and other little gadgets?
But anyways I think wally is right hybrid is a big possibility no matter what engine will come

Look what I just came across! If it is an option on the Tacoma I bet we see it as an option in a year or two in the T4R. It is a Toyota engine that meets USA EPA specs. I would trade in our runner in a minute for a turbo diesel! Then again it would have regen cycles & DEF fluid.
I know I have a few years to figure it out! Lol

    I shall dream away!
It is like the 1st superchargers offered. They were rare but available. I would love a turbo diesel T4R! It would be insane.

Yeah it would be awesome but Toyota is more likely to release a hybrid version than a diesel here. Our .gov has assured that. Could always go for the Colorado ZR2 Bison diesel. It is very tempting and may be the way I go if it's still available for my next vehicle.

I am a Ford & Dodge diesel guy. I know the Duramax series is a good family I just know nothing about them. I also dislike the Colorado & everything from the 1500 until the 4500 series trucks but that is a different animal.
If that engine was available in '18 for a Tacoma, I see no reason why they couldn't offer it in the 4runner...? It had to pass emissions etc...

Almost positive all of Toyotas diesels could come here with little issue. I believe Toyota doesn't think there is a market or their numbers say it won't be profitable enough. They don't sell near as many trucks as the others. Hopefully I am wrong and one shows up in the new Tundra and then hopefully trickles down to the Tacoma.

While that makes sense from an "individual car passing emissions" perspective, Toyota has to think of emissions from both an individual car and an entire fleet perspective. Their entire fleet has to meet certain standards and having both the Tacoma and the 4Runner with diesel engines could put them over an emissions threshold.

It's possible they could just offer a diesel in the 4Runner :)

    but unlikely :(

Well I don’t think that not everyone would choose a diesel when offered, so i don’t see a concern there especially not since Toyota wanna go offensive with the Mirai.
I guess it’s more a traditional thing, a diesel isn’t really a thing here in the US except semi trucks, haulers and hd pickups and it’s easy to notice, just a look around at a gas station - not all of them carry diesel. VW was opening a market for Diesels in regular vehicles and screwed up so a lot of potential buyer are uncertain.
Europe is a different story, the diesel is already established, every gas station carry diesel and you can even get adblue (or similar) out of the faucet into your vehicle.

Remember in the video that this is a drop in conversation kind of like the old superchargers. If it passes emissions for the Tacoma it could easily be an "upgrade" engine.
Toyota will (in my eyes), never really have a share in the truck market in the states. Hell, the new Ford Super Duty's have 1,050 ft/lb of torque! Toyota doesn't have a truck that can handle or compete with that in the US market.
    Fingers crossed!

Although it would never happen, I would like to see either a gas or deisel-electric hybrid. Deisel-electric is a proven
power train technology from trains to submarines. A german prototype deisel electric hybrid reported close to 100 mpg.
