I just submitted a bug report to Apple myself and Toyota, the second one I have done. Had hoped one of the last 2 updates on the iOS would have had the fix in it - but nope. Still waiting. Frustrated as I was so happy when the iPhone 6 worked perfectly. I much prefer the Apple Maps - greatly improved - and the Spotify integration. But no calls when in use, really lame.

Same issue with my 2020 SR5 Premium and iPhone 11 Max Pro. Calls are broken up and overall terrible. I had an issue this morning where the system would show that my phone was calling itself. The unit wouldn’t turn off. My actual phone seemed to not be connected or calling itself. I had to pull over, unplug the phone, turn off the vehicle and restart without have the phone plugged in. After a few moments I’d plug the phone in and CarPlay would work fine. Everything seemed to work normally after that. Then it happened again.
Repeated the above captioned steps to get things to work again. I’ve pretty much relegated CarPlay for music, podcasts and texts. The phone functionality just doesn’t work within CarPlay. Phone calls work fine via Bluetooth though.

Yup, just to pile on...phone app is unusable in my 2020 TRD Off-Road, iPhone 11 Pro Max running 13.2.x. I haven't tested with 13.2.3 yet, but I am not optimistic :)

Anyone download and test out the new iOS update today? I am downloading now, haven't given it a shot yet - we'll see. I didn't see anything specific in the release notes, so not very hopeful.

Doubt it unfortunately. I emailed the contact at apple about any updates and this was her response:

"I’ve confirmed the Engineering team is still working with Toyota on this issue. Your case is still open on my end and I’ve been requesting updates periodically. I’ll keep you posted if I have any new information."

So I assume if it was fixed, she would have mentioned it.

Downloading now. I will test and let you know. Should be about 30 minutes.

UPDATE: No, the new iOS 13.3 did not resolve the issue for me.

It is happening with my iPhone 8 iOS 13.2.3. Worked great twice but now the speaker on the wheel will not work if I’m plugged into Apple car play. It says connect a phone and try again.

Same issues here with 2020 Pro. Everything works perfectly except for phone calls. Lagging and screen freezes with inaudible reception. Following and hoping for an update soon.

I just called into Toyota about my case, and they had no updates. I added links to both this thread and one from Reddit to my case notes. I also upgraded to 13.3 on my 11 Pro Max, with no effect.

Every day I become more disappointed. The only way I can get things to work is to make/receive calls using the iPhone's speaker. It's funny because if you answer calls using the handset while still plugged in you can clearly see that there is no screen lag and everything works. The call timer is accurate and there is no delays. Even the call end button works as it should. The minute you switch audio to the head unit it craps out.

Adding to the list of people with the same issue. I bought a 2020 TRD Off Road Premium last week. I have the iPhone 11 Pro Max and have the same call issues as y'all have previously mentioned. I took my 4Runner back to the dealership and they said the car needed software updates. They did the updates and still have the same issue. I've been going back and forth with Apple to try and get a resolution but no such luck as of now.

My other half has a 2018 Tiguan and my iPhone works fine with CarPlay in that car and others I have driven with CarPlay (different makes and models). I tried my friends iPhone XR in the 4Runner and there are no issues with his phone making calls. It's just the damn iPhone 11!

I'm taking mine to the dealership this week to get the problems documented and get the lemon process started. Pretty easy to document and prove they can't fix the issue. You can just go around the show room with your phone and cable and prove it's just the 4Runner head unit that has the problem right now. I don't really want them to buy my 4Runner back but at least i'll have something to leverage them with if I want something.

I have not read all the posts. Is it just the iPhone 11? I have iPhone 7plus no issues with my 2020 Pro. My wife has the XSMax iPhone and that is what I’m jumping up to when I need to. I never buy the newest phone out.

Mostly the 11. I think someone else said they were having the same issue with their iPhone 8 as well. It's not the phone though. iPhone 11s work fine on every other radio as far as I know (works on my wife's Kenwood aftermarket without issues). Works with other Toyota head units too. Seems to be isolated to this particular model right now.

Me and my wife both have 11 Pros and are both still having issues with the Carplay. Frustrating!

Last I heard back from Apple was that it was still being worked on. I am getting frustrated too. This is ridiculous. It works in ever other car but this one!

Exactly!! WTH. I wonder if it because the 11s come with that new lightning adapter cord, but for the CarPlay you have to use a regular USB cord, which charges my 11 super slow!.. So maybe there is some issue with that, not enough juice to connect er something? Idk just a shot in the dark.

Nothing to do with it. You've always been able to charge the iPhone with a higher wattage charger to take advantage of rapid charge mode. The only reason they went to USB-C to lightning cables is because they did away with USB-A ports on all their computing devices (The USB you are used to seeing).

I currently don’t have access to my 4Runner, but has anyone tried disabling Bluetooth while in CarPlay ‘mode’? Not sure it will even work, but it might be worth a stab in the dark

Just bought a new 2020 TRD Pro 4 Runner in November and I have the exact same issue with my iPhone 11 Pro. Everything works fine on car play until I make or take a call, it then gets really choppy, then the heat unit starts to lag and lock up, I end up having to disconnect the phone and restart the unit. Sounds like this has been going on while for folks, I hope Apple and Toyota bring a fix. I tried my work phone which is an iPhone 8 plus and it works just fine. so it certainly seems like it the iPhone 11 only.

My 8 Plus does it, so it has to be some other factor we are unaware of.

Same issue here. 2020 TRD Pro + iPhone 11 Pro.

Phone calls cut in and out and is unusable. I'm also unable to adjust the guidance volume on Google maps. inside the app, it says to adjust the volume as the nav voice is speaking but only the volume on the audio (radio, music, whatever) is adjusted. Anyone know how to turn off the voice in Google maps altogether?

Just purchased a 2020 monday,, I have iphone 11 with latest IOS update. I concur with the issue for phone calls,, kinda of a lag,, audio goes in/out. No bueno,,,,, but music, texts, maps work fine.( Apple car play)
When I unplug and have the bluetooth on,,, phone calls are crystal clear. I hope there is a fix,,because thats one of the reasons I traded my 2018 Tacoma in .

    Just an UPDATE

I called Apple and got a case number for the issue. The Apple rep and I went through all the normal stuff,,," Are you using the right cable, is SIRI tuned on, blah blah blah... Still didnt work.

Called Toyota and logged a concern. The Toyota rep was really nice and very helpful. She advised Toyota is well aware of the issue and are working for a fix. We shall see, but I wanted to post a more recent update.

It was somewhat encouraging when she already knew what I was talking about when I explained the symptoms. She even asked me for my Apple case number.
