I saw a 1987 Toyota pickup with a Lexus V8 of some sort and a manual transmission in it at a car show once!

I actually have a set of used Doug Thorley long tube headers that’ll be for sale soon if you’re interested. I’m in socal too. I liked the power, sound and reliability they gave but my bottom end died so I’m looking at a 3.4 swap and won’t need them anymore.

As far as the lack of 2nd gens, the 3.0 head gasket problem is the reason they’re becoming rarer. At this point many of these trucks are only worth between $2k and $5k in most conditions and the cost to have a shop replace the head gaskets is between $2k and $3k. Most people aren’t willing to spend that kind of money on a vehicle that isn’t worth that much, especially since most are well beyond 150k miles. Because of this many are sent to the junkyard and get crushed.

Judging by the fact that bumper is visibly rusted through, I'd say the frame was shot. Either that or it was just rusty and had high miles, and the engine gave up the ghost.

A lot of running/driving vehicles, that could in theory be fixed, end up in the junkyard because nobody buys them at auction. My dad has window stickers for three vehicles he's purchased new since 1992, the oldest of them being a 1992 Dodge Dakota LE. I ran the VIN through Carfax, and records show that it was apparently traded in at a Mazda dealer just this past summer (2019) with a little under 150K on the clock, and now it has a junk title. That just makes me sad because I have every intention of driving my Tacoma until the engine goes, and then putting a new engine in it when that happens.

The "unsafe" banner is there due to the fact the doors do not have any door bars in them so it does not fair well in any side impact crashes. I simply put on beefy side boards to add an extra metal layer should such an impact happen.
We did the whole header addition and went with a stainless pair I found on the mighty Amazon for $200. wrapped them and crated some new heat shielding for that side of the engine and so far, no issues! I believe we have her running as well as it can for only being a 3.0. She can keep up with local traffic but not so much on the open highways.

I thought about that unsafe comment as well. My dad had a 1995 SR5 v6 manual 4x4 for 18 years and he'd still be driving it today if he could. He paid to have upper end rebuilt after the HG failed even though it was as much as the truck was worth. Sadly he rolled it a few years ago after blacking out when coming down a local canyon road here. There were 4 people in it, my youngest brother was sitting in the front passenger seat when that door was peeled open next to him. Worst injury was a concussion, all 4 crawled out of the sunroof (which still worked) and the engine was still running with it lying on it's side until the people helping them out of the car reached in to turn it off. I'd say it was sturdy enough that day. Pour one out for Fred the 4Runner, he was a good truck.

OK, I am using a Mac and the damned thing won't let me copy paste a link. :computercoffee:

Here's the easy way to find it...go to the Gen 2 section of this website. Once there scroll down and you will see "Gatorgrl's Grand Gen 2 Makeover". Grab some  or :toast: and start at page one. It's usually one of the top threads. Drop me a message on there so I know you found it. And thanks about the Badass comment. :headbang:

Around here in the west there’s quite a few around, most are pretty fairly priced. I just missed a 90 with a blown head gasket for $500 which I would have kept for a parts truck, was white 4X4 damn near exact match to my truck.

Nice thing about being in this area is they are rust free for the most part.

When I was visiting family in Norfolk, Virginia for Thanksgiving, I saw three 2nd Gens in about a mile of driving. One of them had been rear-ended pretty hard, but it appeared to be reasonably rust free and the person was still driving it. The other two were in great shape.

I am an original owner for a 1990 4runner, 22re 5spd 4X4. Has 275,000 on it. Yes....power is an issue, but if I want to haul ass I drive my 11 WRX. She is pretty much stock, except for a 3 core radiator and header. I call it the Mule, as it may not be quick...but it keeps chugging along. One other weakness I have found is the braking....tends to have longer stopping distance, tends to lock up in less than ideal road conditions. But...all in all she has been a good truck.

I went to Colorado this past summer and while in the Buena Vista area saw 3 2nd Gens that appeared to be in pretty good shape. I have seen 2 others in my area on occasion that also appear in good shape. I have had 4 people stop me while in parking lots asking if I was interested in selling my 2nd Gen. Despite the lack of power, people still love them.

Pretty clean 2nd gen I was behind on my way home from work this morning. Happened to be next to a nice 5th gen. There was a 3rd gen kitty corner at the intersection but I couldn't get them all in the same pic!

Found a complete stock 90's roof rails and installed it over the weekend. Siliconed the stainless steel threaded rivets, the installation seems tight and secure.0104200754.jpg

I had I very clean "91 sr5 that had just had the heads rebuilt for free by Toyota for the head gasket tecall. I met a friend borrow it and she T-boned another vehicle. The plan had been to turn the 2nd gen into a sweet 4x4 rig.

BTHP.....thanks man, I like the color, too....but she needs a refresh. I stripped the stock silver wheels to metal and painted them, I liked the look of those spokes...like them even more black.

It kinda looks like what would happen if a 4Runner and a Wanderlodge had a baby!

Poor 4Runner! I really dislike seeing crappy paint jobs. Whoever thought this looked good? :puke:Reminds of the saying, "there's no accounting for taste". Or the lack there of..
