Hey everyone this may sound like a stupid question but I have a 2014 4runner Limited package with 53k miles and I'm ready to change the front and rear differential oil and transfer case oil. From what I am reading there is a locking rear diff model and non locking model as well as all time 4wd and part time 4wd model. Depending on what you have requires different amounts of oil. I assumed they all had the same setup. How do I know if I have all time 4wd and a locker. I don't see an independent rocker switch for the locker. Also what are the correct fluid levels for the front and rear diffs plus transfer. Going with amsoil severe gear 75w90. Thanks

You have all wheel drive 4 runner.

H4F = All wheel drive with a free center diff allowing front and rear.drive shafts to rotate different speeds like on hard dry pavement sharp u turn
H4L = 4X4 Engaged in regular hi gear with both front and rear driveshafts locked and will spin at same.speed and should only be used in ofd road xonditions to allow some slippage.
L4L = NEED TRANNY IN NEUTRAL AND FOOT ON BRAKE STOPPED to engage and disengage for no grinding. LOW gear 4X4. 25MPH MAX. BOTH DRIVE SHAFTS LOCKED.

Thanks so much I can't believe all this time that I had no idea it was all wheel drive. On another note I looked up my 4runner on the amsoil my garage and it doesn't list the capacity for the transfer case. If I remember my 06 4runner it was around 1 quart. Also it has notes about genuine Toyota oil. Does that mean amsoil is not of the correct spec? I have never seen a notation like this for other vehicles? Thanks

Does your turn dial pointer ever light up at night? On my 2020 it does not. Wish toyota did make it light up.

You need 6 qts, the rear takes 3 the others take 1.5 each.

    (It’s in your owners manual...)

Technically it’s out of spec but good luck finding 75W85 at a reasonable price. I used the Amsoil Severe Gear 75w90 in all my Tacoma’s (03/12) and my current 4R without issue. Those bags are awesome to use.

I actually couldn't find anywhere in my manual where it showed the correct viscosity and amounts required. The only thing I could find was in the maintenance manual, where it suggested the change interval.

Isn't it Full Time 4WD and not AWD?

Interesting......this option wasn't heavily advertised and I had no idea what I had when I bought it. I had an 06 4runner sport before and when I purchased the 14 limited I simply thought it was just a higher trim level but mechanically the same as an sr5..

ALL WHEEL DRIVE = center differential all the time = H4F = SAFE FOR DRY PAVEMENT U TURNS BECAUSE CENTER DIFF IS FREE AND NOT LOCKED.

L letter = front and rear driveshafts get locked, no longer center diffed and can break stuff in dry pavement in sharp turns.

U GUYS should activate 4wd once in a while like every 2 months MINIMUM so actuator does not seize WHEN YOU MOST NEEDED. DRY pavement is ok STRAIGHT ONLY NO TURNS OR IT WILL BIND DRIVETRAIN.

MY NITRO RC TMAXX 3.3 truck is the perfect example of a full time 4wd vehicle. 4X4 all the time front and rear driveshafts are locked ALL THE TIME unless a drive shaft breaks which usually the rear snaps because of the high revving engine and my trigger happy azz is with the radio gun amd then it becomes 2wd front wheel drive with the rear driveshaft in the ground. Fun little truck hobby grade truck to mess around. Never upgraded the rear drivenshaft because it acts as a fuse being plastic so that the tranny does not snap too. I love the smell of burned up nitro fuel. EXPENSIVE HOBBY THAT REQUIRES PATIENCE BUT WORTH IT. Goes up to 50 mph because it is A heavy MONSTER TRUCK. HEAD TURNER SPECIALLY KIDS. the 3.3cc engine screams and revs fast with a good tune and the moddified pipe it has. No such vehicle exists sreet legal in production that I know of. Maybe off road only.

PART TIME 4WD are your typical 4X4 trucks and SUVS WITH NO CENTER DIFF. Can switch from 2wd to 4x4 with both drive shafts lockdd.

    AWD = CENTER DIFF. H4F

maybe one day I can mod that 3.3cc engine into a mini chain saw to trim little branches...

    People have done it.
