I was driving the other day and noticed a strong smell coming from the rear end. It smelt like rubber that was hot. Has anyone else had the same issues?

Maybe your spare is off center and touching exhaust? Or have you undercoated maybe on the exhaust?

I had this rubber smell on my 2016 runner when new.. I moved the exhaust hangers furthest from the pipe.. reduced the smell and after a few months smell is gone..

Mine also has it. My daughter's older CRV also had the same phenomenon.

Can you or anyone else explain what this hanger issue is? I believe have this smell on my 2016, and at first I thought something was leaking or broken but this smell is consistently there especially if I back up.. and I’m covering miles and miles with no actual vehicle issues but the smell drives insane when I get out and smell it

The exhaust hangers smell when they get hot enough. Poor rubber choice by toyota is most likely the culprit. Mine does it less than now that it has 30k miles

This is interesting! I've noticed this every once in awhile and never really looked into it. Thanks for the information, guys!

Exactly. I get this after driving like a maniac pushing through traffic out of the city trying to get home. Stop go, stop go very fast, stop.

So is there a remedy for this hanger issue? Will the rubber melt/fail?

And you are right, it smells like rubber so I was super confused what it could be but next time I smell it I’m going to crawl under the vehicle and try and get near the culprit to see if it’s stronger at the source

OP should also check for axle leak. Rear dif fluid on brake shield or other parts can also cause an odor at rear axle.
4runner had an odor originally when bought new that went away after a year. Cut to last fall when a different odor presented at rear driver's side which ended up being a minor seep from seal. Wouldn't hurt to look underneath at both axles with a flashlight.

You can also get grease slinging from the drive shaft spiders if recently greased. It can sling onto exhaust.
