Low mpg in new TRD pro

Until you learn how to reset your average mpg reading, you’re not getting meaningful current data.

 

Make sure uou calculate your fuel-ups to keep track over the course of the vehicle. This usually gives a better mpg every time then worrying about the computer.
I have a little note book I write in each time and i can make notes about conditions, 4x4, towing, boat on the roof rack, etc. All are factors that can change mpg and good notes to look back and see when something changes if there was a reason why.

e.g. 280miles ÷ 15 gal =18.67mpg

 

@Richmond Dan @Chiefcrunchy Thanks a lot of the advice. I’ll get the mpg reset figured out this weekend. I need to read the manual anyway. Next time I fill up, I”ll start keeping track also. I’ll let you know how it goes.

 

Just hold the DISP button down to reset the average MPG.

14 around town is about right.

 

Driving style and traffic conditions matter. This was totally stock sr5. I can still get over 20 with lift and bigger tires now.

Odd. Mine has consistently been 17.5-19.4 mpg since I drove it off the lot with 2miles on it. Go easy on the gas pedal (tip: scoot your seat back just a tad farther than normal, your foot won’t be so prone to goose it), in town I use s4 so it’s not shifting too much into overdrive (5th). Unless you have heavy bumpers and large wheels, your gas mileage doesn’t seem right.

The general takeaway is YMMV (literally), city driving is worse, mods make it heavier which makes it worse, and driving like a maniac makes it worse.

Me, I just drive the fucker. I keep an eye on the fuel economy strictly from the standpoint of being a nerd, but I don't really care. My wife got rid of a Prius to get her 4R so she really don't care... though she occasionally laments that she misses $12 fill ups.

 

Took about 11k for mine to break in and pass 20 mpg

I did get 25MPG on a flat road 40MPH and the wind was 30 MPH going in the same direction as the vehicle was moving ..north wind and I was going south....
on the return IT dropped down to 19-20 mpg..

 

The TRD Pro is the exact same truck as the SR5 and Offroad. All models should perform similarly, except for maybe the Limited (which has full time AWD).

 

If you are not figuring it by hand it is not accurate.

 

I definitely feel ya on this one... I was almost a 19 mpg before my lift and tires... now 15 mpg. I still love my rig tho

 

Exactly, Calculate by hand... I have a brand new 2018 SR5 . The gauge is close but incorrect.. Mine only has 550 Miles now, filled it full with only 200 miles, set odometer and refilled at about 450mi and reset gauge. Gauge reported 20.5 mpg, Calculated 22.1 Mpg. Now the gauge reads 20.3..... Time will tell

 

I wouldn't buy a 4Runner if you are looking for gas milage efficiency... But it does a lot of other shit really well.

 

Nope mine is a OR TRD Premium. I got 22+ going through the mountains of NC and Tenn on Interstate 40. Nothing to close to that until I had that mileage.

 

I just rolled over 1000 miles and I'm averaging 15.9 vs my 2017 TRD Pro Tacoma which was averaging 18.2

 

I just broke 4K miles. Quite frankly until I modified my driving to the conditions that were driven everyday my mpg sucked. 14.5-15 most times. It's pretty hilly in both directions to my work. Stop and go kills it and hills seem to kill the mpg at least on mine. I don't use the cruise on these trips as it made it even worse. Now flat interstate it will get into the 19 range. You've already admitted you are a lead foot and if you aren't mindful of that ECO bar it may not get much better. Quite frankly I came from a tahoe getting 13.5 at most times so I'm good with what this gets and gets similar to what my 05 Tacoma got with the 4.0 liter. I've tried varying grades of gas and using non ethanol fuel and none really seemed to make much difference. Also have done the manual calculations and so far it has been off by .2-.3 of a gallon so far. Its a 4wd and not exactly aero dynamic but dam what a nice ride it is.

 

16.6 MPG lifted 3.5 with 285/70/17 tires.
More than acceptable in my book.

2018 T4R Pro, Avg 18mpg here in Maine. This has been consistent in our -20f weather, through our 95f Weather. My fiance drives it primarily as I have my 17 Tacoma (24mpg). All in how you drive it. I get better fuel mileage when in the T4R as I am less aggressive off the line than she is (She came from a mazda cx-5, so is enjoying the V6 powerplant)

 

Wow, mpg's seem to be all over the place. I know driving habits are a big factor. I don't think I'm a "gentle" driver, and I did some research with different fuels. My 300 did the best with ethenol free premium, getting 4mpg's better than premium and nearly 7mpg's better than regular. I ran the first tank of regular (dealer fueled) and avg was 17.4. Ran the next tank fuel of premium and got the avg up to 18.9. Ran the third tank with ethenol free premium ($.50 more per gallon than premium) and only squeaked out 19.1. So I have found for me the best mpg's with premium (91 octane). I've since been running the truck on 91 and 3400 miles in the avg has gone up to 19.2. Just wanted to share my experience with this, I know a lot of people don't see a difference between octanes, like I said my 300 with the v-6 (also recommended regular 87 octane) did 7-8mpg's better with no ethenol premium, but the 4runner didn't behave the same although still better with 91 than 87. I also only fuel at Cheveron or Shell stations for comparisons. My rig is still stock height and tires.

 

Ugh. I've had my 4runner for 6 months bought used with 118,000Km. Was owned by a retired couple before and is in great shape BUT I only get 11 MPG! Reading this thread, there must be something wrong as I was seriously reconsidering my purchase. I'll check back with the dealer. Any ideas what would cause it to be so different? Its mostly highway commuting and I'm driving mostly in ECO most of the time, pretty flat as well. Maybe the tires? There seems to be the low tire pressure symbol that comes on ever few weeks after I top up the air.

Maybe time for a little tune up? Also try some Amsoil P.I. in a full tank of gas. Hammer it for the whole tank, I mean really clean it out with many full throttle moments. With an older couple driving it extremely conservatively the fuel system could be a little gummed up, stupid ethanol gas!

 

MPG, or L/100km? I ask because you've listed the "mileage" in kilometers.

11 liters per 100 kilometers works out to be 21 MPG, which is pretty much what the sticker says.

I just managed to squeak out 20.0 mpg even on a 400 mile trip, our old 04 AWD sport with the 4.7 V8 always did better.

 

I am struggling to get to my 19mpg badge. I'm stuck at 18.8. I drive in Tucson, not a ton of hills and I dont mash the gas. 2019 TRD Pro, standard everything. I was hoping the interior led change out would have gotten me to at least 22mpg.

 

That's weird. I had an '03 SR5 V8, and never hit 20. I got close a few times. Meanwhile, I've hit 21+ several times in my ORP, even with a giant roof rack and loaded with gear.

Edit: was the '04 post-VVTI? I thought it came in '05, but it's the only real difference I can think of.

How much highway driving VS city? I'm just curious, as I usually get 20+ on the highway, but around 17 with combined driving.

 

After almost 20k on my ORP I average 20-21.

ECO display and light can be a good coach to help retrain your foot.

A/C compressor will use about 5 hp so that will use a few 10ths of an MPG. If you use recirculating air, set your temp to lowest without being at Max, and run the fan as low as the temps will allow, eventually the evaporator will cool down enough for the compressor to start cycling off and on so the 5 hp stolen by the A/C compressor will be available when it is off.

Hot weather makes the air less dense and therefore makes less oxygen available for the engine which results in fewer horses for the same amount of fuel burned (pilots have to take the ambient temperature into account when calculating aircraft performance and how much weight they can carry).

Purchase your fuel in the morning when the gas station’s storage tanks are cooler and the gasoline is denser (read the label on the pump regarding dispensing by volume). You’ll get more bang for your buck.
